The Roseland Wave Riders

Roseland Wave Riders aim for the top

Young St Mawes windsurfers are off to the T15 Champions Cup

The young windsurfers of St Mawes are aiming for the national top spot after a nail-biting win in the regional final of the Team15 inter-club tournament this summer. The Roseland Wave Riders will be competing in the Team15 Champions’ Cup National Final which will be held on 13-14 October 2012 at Northampton Sailing Club.

Neck-and-neck with the Siblyback Water Warriors throughout the four regional events, the Wave Riders triumphed at the last one, held at Polkerris on 16 September, and are looking forward to racing at the final.

Ones to watch include Ross Warren (13), Josh Croft (15) and Lucy Grayston (14) who sail in the 6.8 class and are all trying for the national windsurfing squad this year too.

A number of 15-year-olds will be competing for the last time in Team15, including Paul Carbis whose sailing in the 5.8 class is, according to Wave Riders’ coach Bob Warren, very consistent; he works hard and received a merit award at the last regional event for “never giving up”.

As in the regional heats, Paul will be joined in the 5.8 class by brothers Taylor and Ollie Jones, and Cameron Thompson – all consistent and skilful sailors.

The younger Wave Riders are also going to give their rivals a run for their money: Scarlett Croft (12) and Lowena Penny (10) have done very well in the 3.5 class. Scarlett is moving up to the 4.5 for the Champions Cup, hoping to have the same domination of that class, leaving little brother Oliver (9) to race in the 3.5s. Lowena is following in her step-brother’s wake – Will Streeter was a successful Team15er a few years ago, and is now an insructor and lifeboat crew on the Isles of Scilly.
