Red Tape

This section aims to cover the principal areas of regulation that apply to sports clubs of every description, from registration of the club bar and the food safety rules to the licensing of fruit machines, from compliance with the Activity Centres Regulations to registration of lotteries and raffles. It also covers the issues raised by the Health and Safety at Work Act as it applies to members clubs, and the Data Protection Act and the exemptions allowed to non-profit making bodies.

Although members' sports clubs are almost all constituted as non- profit distributing bodies, the regulations and controls imposed on clubs are every bit as demanding as those imposed on the commercial business sector, and the penalties for non-compliance can be as severe in some circumstances.
