One Day at New York Fashion Week: Shopbop Senior Stylist Aya

The New York shows are done, and now it’s on to London, Milan, and Paris. In this final installment of our NYFW diaries, Shopbop Senior Stylist Aya Kanai shares her week in a nutshell.

In our collage, starting at the top, and working from left to right:

This week, I bid farewell to summer 2012 and said hello to fashion week!

The Tess Giberson finale in pure white was beautiful—a dreamy start to the shows.

The prints from Band of Outsiders were highlights of the week…

So was spotting Susie Bubble and my pal, Sidney, demonstrating cute overload outside the Rachel Antonoff show.

And finally…

The sweetest bathing suit on Cora at Marc by Marc Jacobs. It was such a great week!

One Day at New York Fashion Week: Shopbop Buyer Jenny

New York Fashion Week has wrapped, but our staffers’ diaries are still rolling in (watch for Aya next). Here, Shopbop buyer Jenny Fuchs shares her Wednesday running between appointments and shows in New York.

7AM Up bright and early for G.T.B. (Gym, Today Show, Breakfast)! I’m wearing a T by Alexander Wang neoprene mini dress, Sigerson Morrison Naomi Booties, and my latest obsession, the Loeffler Randall Ryder Bag.

9AM Luckily, I have a few hours in the office before I head to the shows and appointments, so I seize the opportunity to bring my laptop up to our roof deck to catch up on emails and write some spring 2013 orders.

1PM My first show of the day is Rachel Zoe—her first appearance at Lincoln Center! Her collection was classic Zoe: black and white suiting, gorgeous blush dresses, and plenty of sequins. I was particularly interested in her hats that were styled with most of the looks. My favorite was a woven straw baseball cap—such a cool update!

2PM I had a little time to kill before the Milly show, and I found a grassy knoll behind Lincoln Center. It was so peaceful to relax there for a few minutes before heading back into the tents. The Milly show was really fun. It had a sporty vibe, but was still true to the girly Milly style that we all love. My favorite piece was a laser-cut leather jacket that went down the runway twice!

4PM Next, I head downtown to Chelsea for my Lisa Marie Fernandez swimwear appointment. I am majorly obsessed with this line, and Lisa always comes up with the most interesting fabrications and colors for her collection. As if I couldn’t love the new color scheme (pastels!) and terry cloth bikinis (trust me, they are amazing AND swimmable) enough, the LMF team suggests we do an exclusive for spring/summer and whips out their classic Lauren Bikini in bright aqua! It made my day. (Check out a sneak peek in the photo above. It’ll arrive at Shopbop in April 2013.)

6PM Fashion icon moment of the day: Alexa Chung sighting. Sigh…

7PM My last stop for the day is the Clover Canyon presentation at Lincoln Center. I am a major fan of their prints, so I was very excited for their fashion week debut.  I love that they are expanding into new silhouettes, especially their jackets! I wanted to snag one right off the model.  But what I am REALLY excited for is Clover Canyon swim, and we won’t have to wait until spring 2013 for that. The first delivery hits Shopbop toward the end of November, just in time for the holiday getaway season.

One Day at New York Fashion Week: Shopbop Buyer Justin

It’s quite possible that Shopbop Buyer Justin Warner had the best Sunday ever. He dashed from his apartment in Chelsea to some of the day’s top runway shows and back again, and he did it all with time for a cupcake break. Check out his mini journal of the day below, then see more photos in his Facebook album.

It’s Sunday morning of New York Fashion Week, and I’m up early ready to hit the shows. I need some energy, so I grab some green juice from Organic Avenue first, then it’s off to my favorite coffee place, Grumpy Café for a flat white.

First stop of the day is Derek Lam on West Street. The vibe is pumping and I spot my bosses, Darcy and Jeff. We’re ready for a great show!

After Derek Lam, I’m headed back to Chelsea’s Gallery District for the Thakoon show. There’s a very cool, elite fashion crowd in the gallery, and everyone’s anxiously awaiting the show. Thakoon’s collection is inspired by birdcages and hummingbirds! Why not? It’s gorgeous!

It’s time for a sugar break, so I stop at Billy’s for a cupcake. Perfect amount of sugar to keep me going!

Last show of the day is Zac Posen, so I’m headed back uptown to Lincoln Center. The scene: lots of downtown fashion celebs: I spot Leigh Lezark of The Misshapes. The show’s late getting started. Why? Because Naomi opens! WHAT?!?! Coco closes the show in a gorgeous gown.

Such an amazing day! Now it’s back to Chelsea for some much-needed sleep.

Ask Shopbop: 2 Ways to Wear a Preppy Shirt

Preppy_4x5

Preppy is back for fall and I couldn’t be more excited. What is the easiest way to incorporate it in to my daily style?

Preppy styles like collared shirts, collegiate stripes, chinos, and tailored blazers feel so quintessentially fall. My go-to preppy piece is a chambray button-down. Thin and easy to layer, it’s a great place to start. With the right styling, a shirt, like this one from DSQUARED2, can easily transition from casual to dressy.

RELAXED PREP
The modern preppy look is less crisp than in the past. Ripped denim and slouchy sweaters feel right at home alongside skinny corduroys and structured totes. For this look, I started with a soft DSQUARED2 shirt layered under a semi-sheer Rag & Bone sweater. Pairing with super slim Paige Denim pants, keeps the boyish look from veering too masculine. Polished jewelry and a burgundy tote finish the look with a casual, cool-girl feel.

POLISHED PREP
Primary colors feel very on-trend here, so I tucked the DSQUARED2 shirt under a bright Alice + Olivia jacket. The navy No. 21 skirt complements the dark wash of the shirt as well as the bold jacket, while a stack of bracelets keep it looking young. Anchor the look in the modern, messier prep style with a deep side part and soft tousled waves.

One Day at New York Fashion Week: Shopbop Fashion Director Treena

Our NYFW diaries roll on, today with Fashion Director Treena Lombardo’s notes from Saturday’s events. Check out her account of a whirlwind day dashing between runways in New York.

Saturday is a big day for shows at NYFW! I started the day at Ruffian at 9 a.m.—bright and early! Brian Wolk and Claude Morais, the designers, are great friends of mine, and my best pal, Mark Connolly, styled their runway. The show was great: picture Marie Antoinette living in Brooklyn. They styled the collection with Converse sneaks—adorable—and they had a special Williamsburg Toile de Jouy drawn by the artist John Gordon Gauld. It was gorgeous!

After the show, I made a breakfast stop, and it started pouring rain. It was romantic and relaxing, and, really, the only quiet moment of an otherwise very busy day. After that, it was a quick trip to the office to pick up some of my essentials: Berocca, Smith’s Rosebud Salve, and some Dickinson’s towelettes. I’m telling you, I cannot survive the day without these three products.

The EDUN show was next. This collection was started by Bono (yes, that Bono) and his wife, Ali Hewson. They have a huge portion of the clothes produced in Africa. It’s always nice when people do good things in fashion. From there, Shopbop DMM Darcy and I had a wonderful run-in with Solange Knowles (her hair is fantastic) in the bathroom before the Tibi show. She had her adorable kids at the show, and they sang along to all of the songs.

We wrapped up the night seeing the new designers at Milk Studios. We found some new young stars—look for some exciting collaborations this spring! Then, it was out for drinks at Pastis with friends. It was a lovely end to the day. I wish I could show you pictures, but by that time, both my phone and my feet were pretty well dead.

One Day at New York Fashion Week: Shopbop Buyer Jane

Our team of fashion experts are on the street in New York, flitting from show to show, making note of emerging trends and standout looks on the spring 2013 runways. We’ve asked a few members of that team to share a day in their NYFW world. We start with Shopbop Buyer Jane Albiter, who rushed from Lincoln Center to Milk Studios and back again in super-chic Rag & Bone and Alexander Wang.

7:15AM Up early, with enough time to grab a cup of coffee and check What’s New on Shopbop. Even during fashion week, this is my fave morning ritual.

8:00AM I’m out the door, wearing new Rag & Bone Rani Pants and an A.L.C. colorblock tee. On my feet? Alexander Wang sandals. They never let me down when I’m running around NYC!

12:30PM En route to my next presentation, I breeze into Starbucks for a little afternoon pick-me-up. The iced green tea is so refreshing.

1:00PM Quick stop for an interview with Glamour.com outside Milk Studios.

3:00PM I’m at the Rebecca Minkoff runway show. They’ve got a live band and DJ. Love it!

5:00PM Sitting tight, waiting to see the Rag & Bone collection. This is one of my favorite moments of every NYFW. Let the inspiration begin!

8:30PM Finally done. Headed to dinner and drinks to recap the day’s activities.

Runway Right Now: Shop Rebecca Minkoff Spring 2013

Hot off the spring 2013 runways: Rebecca Minkoff’s Haim Jacket in pretty pastel plaid.

The fashion cycle is a confusing thing. We watch runways filled with fall merchandise at the height of the spring arrivals, and then do the reverse come September, ogling spring offerings just as fall’s favorites hit the stores. For dedicated fashionphiles, it can be an exercise in torturous expectation.

To ease the pain just a bit, we’ve teamed up with Rebecca Minkoff to offer a standout jacket from her spring 2013 collection (it walked the runway just a few hours ago), only at Shopbop. Yes, that means you can get your hands on a must-buy from the spring runways months before it’ll arrive in stores. But you’ll have to hurry—we only have a few!
