Paralympics Race Day 2 - Preview

Written by RYA  | 02 September 2012 Preview of Day 2 of Paralympic Sailing from Weymouth

So two teams sat in pole position and one crew gunning to make up for lost time (literally!) is where we stand at the start of day two.

Helena Lucas in the 2.4mR was arguably the star of Britain’s day one show, a second and first giving her a four-point advantage at the close of play. Lucas will have also been boosted by seeing one of the favourites for gold, reigning World Champion and 2004 Athens gold medallist, Damien Seguin (FRA), pick up a disqualification leaving him no margin for error in the remaining nine races.

Meanwhile Alexandra Rickham and Niki Birrell shared the spoils somewhat predictably with the Aussie duo of Dan Fitzgibbon and Liesl Tesch in the SKUD. A win and a second apiece for each of team saw them tied level three points but with the Brits holding the top spot on account of them winning the second race.

The Sonar crew will be looking to make an impact at the very top end of the fleet today after the controversy of their unsuccessful race two redress request left them in sixth position overall at the end of day one. They will be buoyed by the fact that everyone currently in the top five has posted a mixed bag of results.

All the racing for this event takes place in Portland Harbour. Two races per day are scheduled for each class from 1 to 5 September, with one race for each class on the final day (6 September). Racing is scheduled to start at 11am daily.

So what have we got to look forward today……
