“Leather shorts can look tough, so I thought this feminine paisley A.L.C. top would be a great counter, especially when the shorts are worn in a boyish, uncuffed way. Graphic 3.1 Phillip Lim pumps bring out the tones in the shirt and shorts, and a structured blush clutch adds just a hint of color.”

There is something unique about Christopher Kon’s deceptively simple handbags. The Montreal native builds his designs out of luxurious leathers that only get better with age, and he approaches their design with an innovative ease. Take the fall 2012 collection as example: basket-weave leather and bold colorways are built into utilitarian silhouettes that manage to feel simultaneously classic and new. The designer’s inspiration comes from his own life’s pleasures—surfing, traveling, painting, music—and this unpretentious simplicity flows through each piece in his gorgeous collection.

Often overlooked for trendier pieces, the basic tee is a wardrobe workhorse that deserves some time in the spotlight. Super-soft variations from T by Alexander Wang, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and James Perse feel great and pull double duty in the styling department. The collared shirt. It never goes away entirely, but it does manage to make some waves every few years. The last time the menswear classic was as ubiquitous as it is now? The Clueless era, when Cher Horowitz’s selections were ripe with embellishment and elongated hems. Today’s iteration takes a more classic approach, with clean cuts and crisp collars.

Equipment blouses have become industry standard, and a number of other brands have taken up the cause. A.L.C. by Andrea Lieberman did a standout button-down with a collar trimmed in black peaks—both simple and sublimely surprising. Tibi composed their collar in leather, and most brands (see Free People and the aforementioned Equipment for examples) have interpreted the recurring colorblock trend.

The look is a little bit prep, a little bit menswear, and a lot of fashion. Button the placket all the way up to the neck and tuck a delicate necklace under the collar, or layer this favorite under a comfy crewneck.
