Shopbop Beauty: 5 Tips for Healthy Nails

Nails by Studio Assistant Dokia. She’s holding a Rebecca Minkoff clutch and wearing an Adina Mills Designs ring.

Whether you use a signature lacquer, paint with advanced artistic inspiration, or keep your nails natural, it’s important to not overlook basic nail health. Our in-house beauty expert Kendra has five simple tips to keep your hands happy.

1. Moisturize your hands after every wash. This keeps them from getting too dry and chapped all year long.
2. Clip your nails only when a lot of length needs to be removed. Otherwise try to file your nails to desired length. This will prevent your nails from cracking and splitting at the tips.
3. Always use a base coat when painting your nails. Skipping this part can leave you with dry, polish-stained nails.
4. Never cut your own cuticles. It can lead to infections. Use cuticle oil and gently push your cuticles back.
5. If you have extra-dry hands, rub a petroleum product all over your hands and cover them with gloves to hydrate overnight.

Meet Shopbop's New Fashion Director: Treena Lombardo

Meet Treena Lombardo, Shopbop’s new fashion director. Treena spent 17 years working under some of Condé Nast’s top mastheads—Vogue, Jane, W, and Allure—before joining the Shopbop team, and we couldn’t be happier that she’s here. I stole a few minutes from Treena’s very busy schedule to learn more about her, what she has in store for Shopbop, and her plans for fashion’s biggest fête, Fashion’s Night Out.

Amie: First, tell me a little about how you got into fashion.
Treena: My grandmother was a really talented seamstress. She read Women’s Wear Daily, and she always had the paper out for us to look at when we came over. My mom also sewed clothes and had a great sense of style. I definitely got into fashion through the two of them.

Amie: What’s your favorite thing about working for Shopbop so far?
Treena: I love the pace, and how quickly everything moves here. I love all the people who work for Shopbop. I think it’s the smartest organization that I’ve ever worked for. And I love the Madison, Wisconsin, element. The company is so genuine.
[Editor’s note: Shopbop was founded in Madison, Wisconsin, and its corporate office and warehouse call the city home.]

Amie: What have you enjoyed working on most?
Treena: We’ve been working really, really hard to get the new site looking its best and creating a lot of stories for that. I’m excited that with the redesign we’ll have more opportunities to create great content for our Shopbop girl.

Amie: Are there any exciting collaborations coming up with any of your favorite designers?
Treena: I did a Weibo interview with Derek Lam last week, where we chatted live with some Chinese customers. That was great. I’ve known Derek for over ten years now, and I was really excited to work with him. Chris Benz is a good friend of mine, and we have an exciting project coming up with him as well. It’s all a lot of fun. Sometimes I can’t believe I get paid to do it.

Amie: Now, let’s talk Fashion’s Night Out, coming up in New York on September 6. What are you most looking forward to this year?
Treena: FNO is like the first day of school for fashion folks. I’m looking forward to seeing all of my industry friends, hearing about their summer vacations, and getting chummy again before the upcoming fashion month.

Amie: What are your must-stops for the night?
Treena: Bon Appetit is fêting Chris Benz, so that will definitely be one to hit. The Meatpacking District is going to be insane! The DVF store there will be a great stop for people-watching.

Amie: What’s your go-to FNO outfit?
Treena: I just bought my FNO T-shirt from Shopbop! I’m going to keep it simple and wear it with jeans and Ash wedge sneakers because it’s going to be impossible to get a cab, and heels and the subway just don’t mix.

Check out some of Treena’s picks.

How to Wear Leather Shorts

On Phoebe: Helmut Lang blazer, A.L.C. top, Marc by Marc Jacobs necklace, Theyskens’ Theory shorts, Alexander Wang pumps. On Karina: A.L.C top, Theyskens’ Theory shorts, 3.1 Phillip Lim pumps.

The rich textures of fall are slowing seeping into our wardrobe rotations here at Shopbop. Leather is a seasonal favorite, so we asked two of our lovely stylists to create looks for each other anchored in black leather Theyskens’ Theory shorts.

Karina on Phoebe:
“I love the way a pop of black leather adds edge, balancing out an ultra-feminine look. The give a ladylike blush A.L.C. top with a preppy Marc by Marc Jacobs collar necklace a modern, fresh twist. Now, I know showing a lot of leg can be intimidating, but a flattering, pointed-toe pump will keep you feeling confident.”

Phoebe on Karina:
“Leather shorts can look tough, so I thought this feminine paisley A.L.C. top would be a great counter, especially when the shorts are worn in a boyish, uncuffed way. Graphic 3.1 Phillip Lim pumps bring out the tones in the shirt and shorts, and a structured blush clutch adds just a hint of color.”

New Line to Know: Nonoo by Misha Nonoo

Launched by designer Misha Nonoo in fall 2011, Nonoo offers timeless pieces that function independently of any trend. The young label has already become known for its sculpted shapes and perfect fit, two characteristics that earned its designer the Fashion Group International Rising Star Award for Women’s Ready-to-Wear. We spoke with Misha about her collection, her inspiration, and Nonoo’s Hollywood future.

Shopbop: How would you describe your label to someone who’s unfamiliar with it?
Misha Nonoo: Nonoo is for the woman who loves fashion but doesn’t define herself by it. She is too sophisticated to be dominated by trends. For me, it’s about lifestyle. I strive to create for women who want clothes to wear in every aspect of their lives—from day to evening, for work and travel, and at her most relaxed, as well as her most festive moments.

SB: What is the Nonoo aesthetic?
MN: Refinement matched with whimsy; prettiness that is grounded in the practical. Fit and detail are probably the most important elements to me because I believe they are what turn a great piece into a treasured favorite. I strive to create pieces that work as hard and feel as indispensable as the most basic items, but allow the wearer to express herself, to stand out in an elegant way that embraces her own personal style.

SB: You were raised in London and produce your line in Manhattan. How do these two worlds come together in your collections?
MN: London and New York share an incredibly international backdrop, and they're both influenced by nearly every culture the world has to offer. I love the creative energy of New York mixed with my traditional British heritage. Having those two cities in my background allows me to think globally, and to not be shy about applying an eclectic mix of inspirations.

SB: Tell us a little about the color palette for the fall/winter 2012 collection. You used mostly neutral hues, with shots of deep green and red.
MN: The collection was inspired by the French actress and style icon Anouk Aimée. I wanted to convey the depth and mystery that she symbolizes for me, so I relied on these subtle colors mixed with jewel tones that felt timeless, sophisticated, and profound.

SB: What’s next for Nonoo?
MN: Right now, I am working on pieces for a major Hollywood feature film, which I am very excited about. I always base my own collections on a character in my mind, but to work with actual characters made flesh and born from someone else’s vision is an exciting challenge.

I’ve also begun working with a few actresses on dresses for the Emmys, which is a process I have really enjoyed. I designed my own outfits for my civil and religious wedding ceremonies earlier this year, so I feel attuned to the experience of designing for a particular moment, creating a special mood.

Ask Shopbop: Last Chance Summer

Wilt dress, Lisa Marie Fernandez swimsuit, Soludos flats, Stella McCartney sunglasses, Rag & Bone tote.

I want to get a few more summer essentials before parkas and boots take over. What should I stock up on?

As summer winds down, I take advantage of late summer arrivals and look for classic warm-weather items that will last me through Labor Day and last-ditch beach parties. Scuba-inspired swim is still huge. Look to Lisa Marie Fernandez and Zimmermann for sporty suits that can double as fun, sexy tops. Cotton dresses are a great go-to for late summer, and for the inevitable fall heat wave, I love the easy silhouettes and fun colors from Wilt. Finally, pick up a few of your summer standards. I always end the season with a new pair of Soludos espadrilles, a printed beach bag, and simple sunglasses. You can score some awesome deals, and you know they will still work next summer.
