First off let me say the RYA as an organisation deserves 5 stars, this review is about the training ...courses programme, also let me say on their own each of the first 3 navigation theory courses deserve 4 or 5 stars but combined into the staged progression of essential nav, DS theory, ym/cs theory there are big issues.
I've just passed my Yachtmaster theory course and can't help being rather disappointed. About 90% of the syllabus seems to be a straight rehash of the stuff in Day Skipper theory and the other 10% is just undoing the rather odd seeming simplifications built into Day Skipper. Wish I'd known this before I spent several hundred pounds on day skipper theory! I spent my whole time studying trying to find the new, more in depth, material but it simply isn't there, and no I don't think I missed something as I turned in what my my instructor says was one of the best set of exam answers he has ever marked. In summary as long as you can use a map and compass and are capable of some pretty basic arithmetic I'd say say day skipper is pretty pointless. Even if you don't intend going beyond DS in your practical skills some of the simplifications in the DS theory could cause you some complications out on the water, just do the YM and have done with it, and spend the cash you save on real boating! With so much happening in a growing UK Personal Watercraft Scene & community (Jet ski clubs organisi...ng fundraiser events & social ride-outs, AquaX & JSRA racing, Coniston Speed records entrants, UK success at IJSBA World Finals & right now a strong UK presence at Thailand Kings Cup)......Why do we get virtually no coverage or publicity from the RYA?
Very rarely is anything Jet ski related posted on your pages & even more rare is any mention of jetskiing in the RYA magazine.
There aren't even any personal watercraft related adverts in your magazine, or product features on your social media feeds.
Are we not worthy of the coverage?
We ARE part of the water users community, we contribute to the UK Warercraft retail markets, we pay our RYA membership fees too..Surely we deserve a little exposure? See More

Well done RYA, received your magazine today and found it was not wrapped in awful plastic, but in a ...biodegradable maze & potato starch. What a great idea, congratulations on your efforts to improve the environment. See More
