Tall ships youth Trust / sail training association
The Trust takes 3,000 to sea a year with 75% of the
young people disadvantaged or disabled.
For most, it’s a turning point:-
Steve (17) “I already had a record for car
theft and joy riding but what a difference the voyage made… I’ve
just been back as a volunteer deckhand.”
Ellie’s Mum (daughter has Downs Syndrome)
“From the moment she stepped on board she was accepted as part of
the crew. It truly changed her life”.
The Trust operates six vessels - a 60m brig
Stavros S Niarchos, four 22m ocean going Challenger yachts and a
19m catamaran. Previous vessels have included the two 37m schooners
Sir Winston Churchill and Malcolm Miller.
Working and living together in a physically
and mentally challenging residential environment, young people
develop a wide range of skills relevant to all aspects of their
everyday lives including self-reliance, communication, problem
solving, team working, timekeeping, social skills, awareness of
health and safety. Their self-esteem soars and they learn that the
more they put into a task, the more they get out of it.
Some 20% of young people return as volunteers,
joining a pool of 1,500 regular volunteers. The Trust also has 30
volunteer support groups across the UK.
