Nantwich & Border Counties SC gains funding

Nantwich & Border Counties Sailing Club has been awarded nearly £10,000 that will help them develop sailing opportunities for local people.

The club successfully applied for a Sport England Small Grant  after hearing about the opportunity through the Activate Your Laser Fleet initiative which was introduced to them by the team last year. The money buys the club two Laser dinghies along with sails that increase the range of people able to use them for training and development.

"The club wish to thank the RYA (especially Sally Kilpatrick and Alan Jones), Sport England and Laser Performance for assistance in bringing this project to a great outcome," commented Trevor Carman, Laser Fleet Captain.

Lasers will be seen in the sailing events at Weymouth during the 2012 Olympic Games and it is hoped this will inspire the ambitions of sailors using the boats. The club is taking part in RYA's Sail for Gold which encourages participation in the sport, support for Team GB and inspiration for the future and the boats will be used during their events.

The boats will be used in training at the club and at other times by members wanting to build their experience in this class of dinghy.

Nantwich & Border Counties Sailing Club is an RYA Recognised Training Centre offering sail and powerboat courses. It has a strong junior section  and offers taster sessions to encourage people to try sailing.

The club has a full programme of activities with fleet and handicap racing from March to December on Sundays. It also hosts open meetings, and a national championship, for a number of dinghy classes with sailing on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays. It is based at Doddington Lake, between Nantwich and Newcastle under Lyme close to Bridgemere on the A51.
