Small class sizes - maximum 6 students.

Experienced instructors, we do this all year round.

RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster theory is available Monday to Friday with, if required, the Coastal Prep/Yachtmaster preparation practical taking place on the following week. VHF Radio and First aid courses are generally scheduled for the weekend in-between for maximum convenience and the most efficient use of time.

Location

Our training centre is based on a farm in central Sussex, ideally placed for local yacht sailors and powerboat owners who have craft based in the marinas at Shoreham, Brighton Marina, Newhaven and Eastbourne, Sovereign Harbour.

Leisure craft users in Sussex, Kent and London looking for quality shorebased theory courses in the South East find that we are a great alternative to a long trek to the major sailing centres.

Course syllabus

The Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory syllabus makes considerable provision for the revision of subjects in the Day Skipper Course but those who have not acquired the knowledge set out in the Day Skipper Course are unlikely to assimilate all the subjects covered in this advanced course in the time available.

Building on the knowledge gained from Day Skipper theory the syllabus consists of: Position, The magnetic compass, Tides, Tidal Streams, Buoyage, Lights, Pilotage, GPS and chart plotters, Echo sounders, Logs, Deck log, Meteorology, Rule of the Road, Safety at Sea, Navigation in restricted visibility, Passage planning and Marine Environment.

Subjects such as lights, shapes and rule of the road can usefully be memorised pre-course, as can meteorology terms.

Three exam papers are taken. The IRPCS (rule of the road) paper has a pass mark of 80%. This paper is taken before the end of the course to allow time for a re-sit if required.

Chartwork and meteorology papers are taken on the last day. Unsuccessful candidates are invited to re-sit when they are ready, at no further cost.
