RYA Day Skipper Theory Course in Sussex

RYA Day Skipper Theory

RYA Day Skipper

Navigation & seamanship for the aspiring cruising skipper, sail or power.

Taking a navigation and seamanship course like Day Skipper theory is great fun. We cover a lot of ground (water?) in five days, but having taught the course many, many times we have fine tuned the delivery to get the facts across in the most digestible form possible.

See the syllabus tab to get a taste of the subjects covered. The course is quite broad and forms a sort of 'foundation course' in navigation & seamanship.

Students who progress to Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Theory will find that no new subjects are added to those studied at Day Skipper level, they simply go up a level in complexity.

Many friendships are formed during our courses which see students going on to do their practical courses together with us or crewing on each other's yachts.

Why choose Mustang Sailing for your Day Skipper Shorebased Theory course?

Experienced instructors, we do this all year round.

Small class sizes, maximum of 6 students to a Dayskipper theory course, plenty of individual attention - no getting left behind.

Associated courses

RYA Day Skipper Theory course students may like to consider the following one day RYA courses.

Bear in mind that each of our practical courses entitles the student to a one day course free of charge - you may not have to pay for some of the following when studying with Mustang.

The VHF Radio licence is an essential qualification and a legal requirement wherever you sail.

The RYA Sea Survival course is a potential life saver and should be taken by all responsible sailors along with it's stable mate the RYA/ISAF Offshore Safety course.

The RYA Diesel engine course is very useful if you are not a natural 'tinkerer' with things mechanical and the RYA Radar course is ever more popular with radar becoming more affordable. Radar tends to be viewed as a collision avoidance tool but actually has a much wider remit as a powerful pilotage tool.

Location

Our Ringmer training centre in central Sussex is ideally placed for local yacht sailors and powerboat owners who have craft based in the marinas at Shoreham, Brighton Marina, Newhaven and Eastbourne, Sovereign Harbour.

Leisure craft users in Sussex, Kent and London looking for quality shorebased theory courses in the South East find that we are a great alternative to a long trek to the major sailing centres.

Day Skipper Theory Format

Our theory courses are run in our training centre in rural Sussex near Lewes.

RYA Day Skipper theory is only occasionally taken as a stand-alone course, more often being incorporated into a 'fast-track' or combined (theory and practical) Day Skipper course.
Students who have other arrangents for the practical element, perhaps sailing abroad or on their own vessel as own-boat tuition may join our combined course students to study the theory over two weekends with one day or two evenings between the weekends. . , .

The Day Skipper Practical Course

Our practical sessions take place in the Solent, see Day Skipper Practical for more information.

Testimonials

The training centre was clean, well organised with good tea and coffee making facilities, fridges and snacks and very good teaching aids. Being on a farm made it a very quiet and relaxing environment in which to learn. The theory element of the course, was excellent. I cannot remember when I learnt so much in so short a time.
Simon, April 2011
The theory element of the course was well taught by experienced instructors who know and love their subjects. Their passion for sailing and enthusiasm to teach really comes across well and enabled me to take the most away from the theory course possible.
Paul, May 2011
Excellent course - loved the pace and atmosphere of trainer and the aids used
John Paul Q.
Very effective instruction on a course with a lot of detail
