A sailor has begun an 8,000-mile voyage across the Pacific Ocean in an engine-less boat to raise awareness for the protection and humane treatment of dolphins.

Jim Sullivan expects the journey in his 30-foot sailboat ‘Elusive Spirit’ to take about three months. Videographer Armando Valdez Kennedy will be onboard shooting underwater footage of dolphins and whales along the way.

Jim plans on using the ocean’s current and wind to guide them to their destination, following the same trade route used by Spanish galleon ships in Mexico hundreds of years ago.

The expedition is in support of The Dolphin Project, run by Ric O’Barry, the famous dolphin trainer featured in the Oscar-winning documentary ‘The Cove’.
