470 Girls Want a Golden Post Box!
Saskia Clark admits the British 470 Women are bidding for a golden post box as they head into the business end of their London 2012 Olympic regatta.
Clark and Hannah Mills scored finishes of fifth and second today (Tuesday 7 August) to sit four points behind leaders Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie (NZL) while they have a three point advantage over Lisa Westerhof and Lobke Berkhout (NED).
The 470 Women were the last class to get their 2012 Olympic regattas underway and have two series races and their final double points’ medal race to come on Friday (10 August).
And the girls admit they are relishing a big day on the water tomorrow as the teams bid to position themselves as strongly as possible before the final double-pointer.
Mills said: “It’s a big day. All we want is to go into the medal race with a good chance of winning and if we go away tomorrow having achieved that then we’re super excited and we will be hyped for the medal race.
“We are sailing well. A couple of things didn’t quite go our way today, that’s just how it is. Hopefully at some point that will change and we’ll get a couple of things go our way and they won’t get the same things go their way. It is swings and roundabouts and we just need to keep chipping away and make sure we are still in there and as close as possible come medal race.”
Saskia added: “There are three of us that have pulled clear of the fleet so I don’t think we are going to have the situation that the British 470 boys have got where it’s a one-on-one. It’s probably going to be a three-way scrap with the Dutch and Kiwis. Are we confident of having a golden post box in our home town? That’s the goal.”
The Women’s 470 medal race is scheduled for Friday (10 August) at 1pm on the spectator Nothe course.
The Olympic Sailing Regatta runs from Sunday 29 July – Saturday 11 August.
