Having campaigned 470s and 49ers himself, Maurice’s first serious foray into coaching came when he was invited to coach the Dutch 470 World champion brothers, Ben and Jan Kouwenhoven, for Atlanta 1996.
He has since coached at four Olympics, including helping Mandy Mulder’s Yngling team to Beijing 2008 silver, as well as being involved in three Volvo Ocean Races over the past 10 years.
Paardenkooper has coached the British Match Race Girls of Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and Kate Macgregor since they invited him to join their campaign in early 2011.

How did you get involved with the team? |
I was asked by the sailors. |
How did you start coaching? |
The sailors selected for the 1996 Olympic Games asked me to coach them. |
Can you explain what a normal day working/coaching for Skandia Team GBR involves? |
Most of the time we do 1 or 2 sessions on the water. After that I work on the video analysis, and debrief. In the evening we work on the program and training schedules. |
If someone has underperformed what’s the best way to get him or her back on track? |
First I try to analyze the problem, when you find the problem you can use that in your training sessions. |
