The world’s first stealth ship, said to have inspired the vessel in the 007 film Tomorrow Never Dies, is up for auction.

The Sea Shadow was built by the US Navy in the 1980s to carry out top secret experiments, but you won’t be able to go on any undercover missions with this one. Although it cost more than $195 million to develop, it is to be sold for scrap.

Undetectable by radar, this stealth ship was home to the most advanced military technology of its time and was kept secret from the public until 1993. As one of the most secretive projects in history, it could not be assembled openly. The makers, Lockheed Martin, ordered parts from different suppliers, who were never shown the blueprints of the completed ship.

The Sea Shadow still contains unique technologies that would be of interest to navies around the world, so the new owner will have to dismantle the 563-ton vessel inside US borders until it has no value except ‘for its basic material content’.
