Following the success of our Day Sailing and Term Charter operations, and given our passion for sailing and love of Antigua, the formation of our own RYA Recognised Training Centre was an inevitable next step. As a result we bring you the highest possible standard of sail training in the beautiful Caribbean. There can be nowhere better to learn!
For years, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) of Great Britain has been the pioneer and guardian of Leisure Sailing Training. Respected as the leader in its field, it has evolved a “Sail Cruising & Yachtmaster Scheme”, unchallenged anywhere in the world. Thousands of experienced sailors have given their input to make this scheme the best available to leisure and career sailors alike.
All of us at “Miramar Sailing” started our careers with the RYA and have progressed from total novice to RYA Certified Cruising Instructors and Yachtmaster Examiner over many years. Through the auspices of the RYA we are delighted to offer you their scheme, and our experience, in the hope that you will develop the skills, and passion for sailing, that we enjoy.
Sail Cruising & Yachtmaster Courses
The “Sail Cruising & Yachtmaster Scheme” provides courses at all levels from novice crew to advanced skippering. From the bottom of the ladder to the top, these courses are:
- Start Yachting
- Essential Navigation & Seamanship
- Competent Crew
- Day Skipper
- Coastal Skipper
- RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal
- RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore
- RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean
The final 3 courses achieve Certificates of Competence recognised by maritime authorities throughout the world and are often required qualifications for professional skippers.
Supplementary Courses
There are also some supplementary courses that support the sail training courses. These are:
- First Aid
- VHF Radio Operator
- Diesel Engine Maintenance
- RYA/MCA Basic Sea Survival
- Radar
Before a Certificate of Competence can be awarded, the First Aid and VHF Radio courses must have been completed. In addition to all the sailing courses listed above, the Miramar Sailing School also offers these 2 courses.

Advanced Courses
We have also developed our own “Yachtmaster Xpress” programme. This provides the totally focused among you with the opportunity to not only embark on a 3 month, multiple island, Caribbean Sailing Adventure, but also to achieve all the qualifications and experience required to take you from complete novice to RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore. If a professional sailing career is your dream, the “Yachtmaster Xpress” is one way of achieving it.
There is another internationally recognised Training Scheme known as STCW 95. For those of you considering any kind of career in the Super Yacht industry, this is a must have! While we do not offer courses in this programme, we are happy to provide guidance and information on establishments in the Caribbean that do.
