Coachella Packing List: 8 Essentials

ALC maxi dress, LNA V-neck, Oliver Peoples sunglasses, Cleobella bag, Eugenia Kim fedora, Cali Dreaming bikini, Citizens of Humanity floral shorts, Osborn oxfords.

Coachella: three days of incredible music in the California sun. The equation to make it through the hours spent dancing in the heat? Airy fabrics, comfy shoes, and lots of sun protection. Here’s what’ll make it into my suitcase next weekend:

1. Bright Bikini: The number-one way to battle the heat is to keep the layers to a minimum.
2. Floral Cutoffs: A cooler take on the printed denim trend.
3. LNA Tee: The whisper fabric makes you feel like you’re wearing nothing at all.
4. Airy Maxi: A long hem feels so sweet in a gentle breeze.
5 & 6. Fedora & Sunnies: Sun protection at its chicest.
7. Easy Oxfords: Boots are a standard for this fest, but oxfords feel a little more fresh.
8. Earthy Messenger: A convenient carryall keeps hands free for dancing.

In a fitting close to New York Fashion Week, Tribune Standard Designer Tawfik Mounayer rang the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange yesterday, flanked by models wearing his fall 2012 collection. To mark the occasion and to honor his mother, who succumbed to leukemia in 1994, Mounayer donated clothing and headscarves in his signature prints to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Scene @ Fashion Week: ELLE's Kate Davidson Hudson

ELLE Accessories Director Kate Davidson Hudson at New York Fashion Week.

As New York Fashion Week draws to a close (and London gets started), we talked with ELLE Accessories Director Kate Davidson Hudson about the week that was and what she’s coveting this spring.

Shopbop: Describe NYFW in five words or less.
Kate Davidson Hudson: Exciting, inspiring, exhilarating, intense, compelling.

SB: The biggest misconception about Fashion Week?
KDH: It’s all glamour and no grind. In reality, it’s work and a lot of pounding the pavement.

SB: What’s your best advice for surviving fashion week?
KDH: Don’t hit every after party; sleep is key.

SB: Can you share a favorite NYFW memory?
KDH: I have many, but Alexander Wang’s supermodel finale at his show this week definitely makes the list!

SB: What fall trend was on your radar while attending the shows?
KDH: For fall my challenge is always to find the perfect coat. Right now, I’m hunting for the perfect military-inspired pea coat with fur trim.

SB: What’s the first thing you do post-NYFW?
KDH: Pack my bags. After New York I’m off to Milan and Paris. New York Fashion Week is only the beginning!

SB: And finally, let’s talk about the current season. What spring trend are you wearing to shreds?
KDH: I love the urban athleticisim that we’re seeing in so many of the spring/summer collections. It’s an idea that marries graphic designs with high utility, so the pieces feel fresh and modern, yet highly wearable.

Scene @ Fashion Week: White

It may not be a white winter, but women all over New York Fashion Week are styling themselves in the snowy shade. Worn as a head-to-toe look or as a backdrop for a statement bag, we’re on board with this frosty fashion.

Scene @ Fashion Week: Pastels

Pretty in pink, purple, lemon, and minty green, pastel shades are popping up from Lincoln Center to  Milk Studios and everywhere in between. Our favorite looks? Tone-on-tone styling and pale shades paired back to bold black.

Scene @ Fashion Week: Floral Prints

We’re five days into fashion week, and as it goes every year, the street style looks are proving just as inspiring as those stomping down the runways. One trend that’s caught our eye: floral prints. From the abstract to the boldly graphic, the fashion flock is clearly on board with flora.

Catching Up with Street Peeper Photographer Phil Oh

Street Peeper Founder Phil Oh

Fashion Director Kate Ciepluch put it best when talking about Phil Oh: He’s such a cool guy, and he’s everywhere. During fashion month, it would seem the man behind Street Peeper is in all places at all times, photographing cool girls in their chic clothes for Shopbop, Vogue.com, and his own website. (We’re convinced he doesn’t sleep.)

We caught up with Phil during a few spare minutes to talk about all things street style.

Shopbop: How did you get started in street style photography?
Phil Oh: There were two street style blogs I knew of at the time when I started Street Peeper, but I loved the Japanese magazines Street and Fruits, which documented what the kooky Tokyo fashion kids were into. I wanted to start a blog of my own about style that I found to be interesting. I didn’t have a background in fashion or photography, but sort of grew into them as the years went by. I guess it was also an excuse to travel again to places like Paris, London, Tokyo, Sydney, and more.

SB: The medium is really growing and evolving. How do you see it affecting fashion now and in the future?
PO: I think street style blogs help readers think about new ways to explore fashion. It’s inspiring to see how real people put together their looks, and I hope readers can incorporate some of those ideas into their own personal style. That said, I think street style blogs perhaps can push trends in certain directions. Design teams at all kinds of brands—from fast fashion to mass market to high fashion—use street style photos on their inspiration boards, so maybe these photos do have some effect on what happens in fashion at design and retail levels.

SB: What catches your eye when shooting street style?
PO: I love color and prints above all—when done well, of course. I feel like people are starting to open up to exploring color palettes beyond neutrals and black, and taking more chances with print and pattern. It’s exciting! Though one doesn’t have to dress like a clown or pile on the trends. Chic and simple can be just eye-catching and interesting.

Shopbop at FNO: Fashion Director Kate Ciepluch

Tomorrow’s the big day, and the excitement over our live Fashion’s Night Out coverage is palpable in the Shopbop offices. We took a minute to talk with Fashion Director Kate Ciepluch about fashion’s biggest shopping event.

Shopbop: What are you most looking forward to doing on Fashion’s Night Out?
Kate Ciepluch: For the first time ever, we’ll be providing FNO video coverage live on our site! We are thrilled to offer our customers a glimpse into this energetic night. I’m looking forward to interviewing designers and seeing all the cool things going on in the stores, from Best Coast at Helmut Lang to the Mercedes Benz-sponsored “Best Street Style” event outside the Derek Lam Soho store.

SB: Why do you think FNO is important to fashion?
KC: As the season turns to fall and the temperature drops in NYC, the atmosphere and mindset automatically shifts. It’s time to kiss the beach goodbye and get slightly more serious about everything in life! FNO officially kicks off the fall shopping season with the best of the collections on display in a celebratory, festive environment where a brand’s personality can really show through.

SB: NYFW starts this week as well. Which shows are you most looking forward to attending?
KC: Phillip Lim, Band of Outsiders, and Preen.

SB: And finally, let’s talk fall must-haves. What’s on your list?
KC: Sonia Rykiel’s patchwork blazer, a red bootie, Jerome Dreyfuss’s shearling tote, and yummy knits worn with cognac leather pants.

Tune into our official Fashion’s Night Out page tomorrow! Live coverage starts at 8pm Eastern Time.

What Are You Doing for Fashion’s Night Out? Lola Rykiel of Sonia Rykiel

The fashion world is gearing up for the four weeks in New York, London, Milan, and Paris that define Fashion Month, but first, they’re getting ready for Fashion’s Night Out. Shopbop’s plan is in action (details here), so we decided to ask a few of our favorite designers what they’re doing for FNO. Today, Sonia Rykiel brand ambassador Lola Rykiel.

Shopbop: Why do you think FNO is important?
Lola Rykiel: FNO is a great idea because it raises fashion to a much more cultural level, rather than just a commercial affair. It is no longer about buying nice jeans but rather about dressing up for an evening out. Shops are open, designers are present, and shoppers are buying the same nice jeans in a completely different context. So magical!

SB: What is your favorite item from your fall 2011 collection?
LR: Definitely the Plaid Long Sleeve Dress from the runway. It is perfectly tailored and fits so well. I wear it with the Lola Bag that I love!

SB: What are you most looking forward to the night of FNO, and for NYFW?
LR: I am excited about going to so many events on the same night and checking out all the different venues. I am also excited about the different Sonia Rykiel outfits that I plan to wear throughout the week mixed up with some beautiful jewelry from Natasha Collis, who’s sending me some unique pieces from London. For Paris Fashion Week, I am looking forward to our show, which will be the 1st of October.

What Are You Doing for Fashion’s Night Out? Kit Willow

Today, the designer behind Australia-based WILLOW clothing, Kit Willow.

Shopbop: What do you have planned for Fashion's Night Out?
Kit Willow: We’re hosting a fabulous cocktail party in Sydney, where I’ll discuss the inspiration behind the WILLOW Urban Rider collection while guests drink Pommery Champagne and munch on Lindt macaroons—yum!

SB: Why do you think FNO is important?
KW: FNO is important because it gives us a chance to speak to the women who wear and love our clothes. It’s the most valuable feedback you can get as a label. And it’s good fun!

SB: What is your favorite item from your fall 2011 collection?
KW: LOVING the print high-waisted pants. Modern edge with comfort—perfection!

What Are You Doing for Fashion’s Night Out? Markus Lupfer

Today, the London-based, German-born man who makes our favorite knits, Markus Lupfer.

Shopbop: What do you have planned for Fashion's Night Out?
Markus Lupfer: We will be customizing Fashion’s Night Out tees, so every customer will be getting an original Markus Lupfer tee.

SB: Why do you think FNO is important?
ML: Fashion’s Night Out is a great international event for designers, as it raises profiles, provides connections between designers and customers, and acts as an interactive, fun night out for everyone!

SB: What is your favorite item from your fall 2011 collection?
ML: I love the Forest Lace Dress. It was inspired by Claudia Schiffer.

What Are You Doing for Fashion’s Night Out? Marchesa

Marchesa designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig.

Today, the women behind Marchesa and Notte by MARCHESA, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig.

Shopbop: What do you have planned for Fashion’s Night Out?
Georgina Chapman: We’re very excited to be a part of Fashion’s Night Out again this year, and especially thrilled to be in New York, where FNO first began. Our night will be busy running around the city, shopping to support the cause!

SB: Why do you think FNO is important?
Georgina Chapman: FNO really showcases the best of what New York City fashion and retail have to offer. It’s also a great chance to relax and have fun before all the fashion week madness begins.

Keren Craig: Fashion’s Night Out has really become a force in the fashion industry. Having an entire night devoted to supporting designers—established and emerging—is a wonderful way to celebrate what we do.

Shopbop: What is your favorite item from your fall 2011 collection?
Georgina Chapman: The strapless lace cocktail dress with tulle overlay and beaded appliqué is a particular favorite of mine. This dress is a great investment piece: it’s elegant, timeless, and works well for a wide range of occasions.

Keren Craig: I adore the rouge draped strapless dress. It’s effortless, yet subtly sexy.
