Exclusive Short Film: Shopbop's Launch Pad

Shopbop’s exclusive short film, Launch Pad, premiered today, along with an exclusive video game.

We’re serious about fashion, but that doesn’t mean fashion has to be serious. Watch as favorite designers Chris Benz, Thakoon, Alice + Olivia’s Stacey Bendet, and Rachel Roy ready themselves to be catapulted into the stratosphere, straight to the doors of happy Shopbop shoppers. And keep an eye out for cameos from a few of our industry favorites, including June Ambrose, Phil Oh, Leandra Medine, and the ladies of DANNIJO jewelry.

Then, when you’re done with the film, head over to our exclusive game, where you’ll fling fashion avatars at Shopbop boxes to score points. This writer pulled off a score of 20,500 this morning. Can you beat it? Tell me in the comments.

Nicole Richie on House of Harlow 1960 & Winter Kate

Adding to her ever-growing fashion empire, Nicole Richie introduces handbags to her House of Harlow 1960 collection this season. We talked with the designer about the evolution of her HoH and Winter Kate labels, as well as the inspiration behind the current collection.

Shopbop: You launched House of Harlow 1960 in 2009, and since then, the brand has grown to include shoes, sunglasses, and now handbags. Tell us a little about how this evolution unfolded. Was it a natural progression?
Nicole Richie: I’ve always envisioned it to be a lifestyle brand, so all the categories that we’ve launched into were always a part of the initial equation.

SB: How would you describe House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate to someone who is unfamiliar with the brands?
NR: The collections are for the multitaskers who want to look effortless and who want fashion to actually be easy and comfortable.

SB: How do the two brands complement each other?
NR: They both have the central focuses of being fun, effortless, and comfortable.

SB: The names of both of your labels—House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate—come from a personal place, your daughter’s name. For you, how personal is the design process and its final result?
NR: I am a part of the entire process from sourcing fabrics, draping silhouettes, and selecting the color palette for the season to selling, merchandising, and shooting the lookbook. I need to be involved in every aspect of the business—this is how I can learn and grow.

SB: Tell us about the inspiration behind the fall collections. What sources did you draw from?
NR: The Winter Kate fall 2011 collection was inspired by style icons of the late ’60s and early ’70s, such as Penelope Tree, Peggy Moffitt, and Edie Sedgwick, incorporating a mod twist, while continuing to stay true to the collection’s signature style.

The root of the House of Harlow 1960 identity lies within its easy, relaxed, and bohemian vibe, which is exactly where the inspiration for the fall handbag collection was drawn from. The concept is based around playing with the juxtaposition of casual and luxury. Taking “casual,” soft-draping vintage leathers and mixing with “luxe” materials like haircalf.

Introducing Pencey Standard: We Talk with Designer Christina Minasian

Shot by Greg Minasian/SPREADHouse

Meet Pencey Standard. An offshoot of downtown cool-girl staple Pencey, Pencey Standard aims to be the go-to collection of wardrobe basics. We talked with the brand’s designer, Christina Minasian, about this new addition to the Pencey family.

Shopbop: What is Pencey Standard and how does it fit into the Pencey clothing brand?
Christina Minasian: Pencey Standard is a collection based on tee shirts, but it encompasses so much more. We have dresses, skirts, pants, and tops. The idea of the collection is to provide simple, classic layering pieces that fit into any wardrobe. The styles are timeless and can be worn through different seasons.

SB: How do you see Pencey Standard growing within the Pencey brand?
CM: The line will develop and change but still remain true to its core purpose of always having the perfect t-shirt. Small details will set it apart, just like Pencey.

SB: The color palette is essentially colorless—white, black, and grey. Why did you take this approach?
CM: For our introduction, we wanted Pencey Standard to be classic and clean, and have the versatility to layer with anything all year long.

SB: What is your favorite piece from the collection? How do you wear it?
CM: My two favorite pieces are the Football Tank and Football Crew. I love that the cut is sexy, but still oversized and a bit masculine. They are great paired with your favorite jeans.

SB: Who should wear Pencey Standard?
CM: Everyone!
