This ceremony became part of the tradition of the Royal Regatta in the last century, having been established in 1933.
At 7.00pm on Wednesday, 29th August,the Town Mayor, the Lord Lieutenant,the Chairman of the South Hams District Council, Honoured Citizens, Town Councillors, Distinguished Guests, the Regatta Chairman, Regatta Committee Members and town organisations assemble outside the Guildhall prior to the procession to the Royal Avenue Gardens.
On arrival at the Royal Avenue Gardens a maroon will be fired at 7.30pm. and proclamations read.
The Mayor, Councillor Paul Allen, will officially open the 2012 Royal Regatta. The Mayor will invest the Regatta Chairman, Mr Hilary Bastone, with the replica of the Silver Oar in the form of a lapel brooch.

This traditional event is the start of Regatta and everyone is welcome to come along as a spectator to enjoy the event and start to get into the Regatta spirit.
