Wastwater is the deepest lake in the District, and in fact in Britain, with a depth of 260ft. It's three miles long and half a mile wide and is quite stunning in that it is surrounded by mountains, including Scafell Pike (977m) - the highest peak in England.

The lake is owned by the National Trust, who also own Scafell Pike, and a youth hostel and campsite near the lake. St. Olaf's Church, allegedly the smallest church in England, is nearby.
