The Walsall Canal is fast becoming an example of an urban waterway revived. Environmental improvements along the canal have made it a waterway for local people to be proud of - most notably through the dramatic developments at the once derelict Walsall Town Wharf, including an acclaimed art gallery. And more is planned!

The Town Arm, in the heart of Walsall, is almost unrecognisable from just a few years ago when it was on the point of being lost forever. Totally renovated, it now has mooring facilities for boaters and a range of exciting attractions.

Why not discover why Walsall became the British leathergoods capital at the Walsall Leather Museum (01922 721153)? Or perhaps visit the New Art Gallery, which opened in February 2000 and displays an impressive collection of contemporary and modern art (01922 654400).

For nature lovers, walking enthusiasts and cyclists, the canals in Walsall are part of the cycling and walking network that connects the town centre to the surrounding countryside. Time your visit to Walsall to coincide with the Walsall Illuminations - Britain's biggest in-shore illuminations, held in Walsall Arboretum (01922 653148) - or alternatively enjoy some shopping in the bustling town centre and then reward yourself with a bite to eat and a glass of wine at the stylish Wharf 10 bar.

Other attractions include the Jerome K Jerome Birthplace Museum (01922 654315) and boat trips on The Wharf Narrowboat (0121 568 7929).
