From Tadcaster to the River Ouse, the 9.25 miles of River Wharfe demand respect. It is popular with canoeists especially in the upper reaches. At Ulleskelf, about 4 miles below Tadcaster are clay 'huts' or shallows in the river bed that require care.

Tadcaster is best known for its brewing connections and marks the practical limit for most craft. The river is not without its foibles and local advice should be sought prior to navigating it. There is a path throughout.
