Heading upstream the River Ouse changes its name to the River Ure at Swale Nab and then continues to the Ripon Canal at Oxclose Lock, a distance of 8 miles. The Ure is an exceptionally pretty navigation and is rarely crowded.

Newby Hall and its splendid gardens are just above Westwick Lock. A long landing welcomes visitors. The Lower Ure Conservation Trust aims to promote and improve the ecology of the middle and lower sections of the River Ure.
