How to get involved

The Selections for the British Keelboat Academy take place in September each year, with applications open from May to mid August. Keep an eye on this website, our Facebook page and the marine media for further information.

Some applicants will already have reached a reasonable level of sailing, and some will be brand new to the sport. Sailing experience can be on any size of boat, dinghy or yacht, and need not include racing. Applicants who have non-sailing backgrounds are likely to have other strengths which the selectors identify as fitting with the aims and objectives of the programme, for example, exceptional physical fitness, a drive to succeed, a focus on getting the most from their future.  Applicants should also have the time and commitment to make full use of the training and opportunities available.

Selections for the Academy take place in the autumn/winter each year for the following 12 months, and sailors must receive an invitation to attend.

The selections will test a range of the skills we are looking for in young sailors, including sailing ability, how receptive candidates are to coaching input, physical fitness, and teamwork, leadership skills, focus on self development and project management skills.
