Circular route from: Devizes Wharf
Discover one of the wonders of the waterways on this long circular route.
1: Devizes Wharf From Devizes Wharf cross the bridge and follow the green signs for Caen Hill Locks. At the top of the lock flight take care to control your speed down the hill, at the bottom of the locks go under the bridge and turn immediately left to leave the towpath and join the road. Turn right towards the A361 dual carriageway. At the dual carriageway turn left and go part way up the hill, take the next right turn signposted to Potterne.
Continue along this road for about a mile where it will lead you in to the village, at the T junction turn right (by the church) and cycle down the hill and through the village. Take care this is a blind corner for some traffic. On the bend take the left fork signposted to Urchfont, this is a long and twisty road that will lead you into the village of Urchfont (approx. two miles).
2: Urchfont Go into the village passing the pond and church and bear left towards Devizes just past the shop. Continue on this road for approx. 1.5 miles, over the cross roads and to the T junction at the end, turn right here taking care this road can be busy. Cycle as far as the turning for Chirton, turn left and go down the slope into the village and continue through.
3: Chirton You will now stay on this road for quite a distance. It will take you through Patney (where you will pick up Sustrans Route 4) over the railway bridge and towards All Cannings. After the narrow bends, turn left signposted Etchilhampton and Devizes. Follow this road for about a mile as far as Etchilhampton village.
4: Etchilhampton Turn right at the crossroads for Coate. Go up the hill; from the top of the hill, both the Devizes and Alton Barnes White Horses can be seen. From Coate follow the Route 4 signs back to the towpath and then follow the towpath back to Devizes.
