Cycling along the Kennet & Avon Canal

Cycling at Caen Hill Locks in Devizes on the Kennet & Avon Canal

Cycling is permitted throughout the length of the canal, except for a short section near Froudes Bridge and Woolhampton. (The section through Woolhampton is now private property).

The Kennet & Avon Cycle Route combines towpath cycling with diversions via country lanes where the path is less suitable. Expertly waymarked by Sustrans, the cycle charity, you can find a full description with specially-compiled maps using the links below.

Please remember that the Kennet & Avon is a popular waterway for walkers and boaters, many of whom are travelling at speeds slower than you. Be prepared to slow down and dismount when necessary. Cycling on the Kennet & Avon is free and does not require a permit.

Please note Lock 89 & 91 have also been padlocked to maintain water levels and to safeguard personal safety on the lock stoppage.

Stoppage: Culvert 64, Semington

Towpath has been closed

Culvert 64, West of Semington Swingbridge 161. These works will now commence on Monday 13 February 2012. The navigation will be closed from just west of Semington Swing Bridge 161, to just east of Whaddon Grove Bridge 162, from Monday 13 February 2012, works to be completed by Friday 9 March. (Please note the original start date for these works has been changed from 30 January 2012.)

Restriction: Between Bridge 138 and Bridge 136 - Devizes

Contractors carrying out Bank protection work and Towpath resurfacing work.
This work will restrict the available width of the canal due to contractor's plant equipment. Please be patient when approaching these works area and allow contractors to reposition plant equipment to allow boaters to pass. In order to maintain public safety on the towpath unfortunately the towpath between these two bridges will remain closed throughout the duration of these works

Restriction: Bridge 171, Bradford on Avon

Wiltshire Council will be undertaking maintenance works on Bradford on Avon Bridge 171, the works will require scaffold to be erected to the underside of the bridge reducing the navigational width. To ensure the works have the minimum disruption to our users and canal traffic movement is maintained, a traffic light system will be installed on the canal towpath either side of the bridge. Users are advised to approach the area with caution and follow the information signs plus traffic light sequence to achieve clear passage past the works.
The works are scheduled to commence as of Monday 5th March 2012 with a duration of up to 5 weeks with anticipated completion on or prior to Thursday 5th April 2012.
Please be advised the towing path will be closed during the works, users are advised to follow the diversion route indicated
