River Ivel
Bedfordshire's lost navigation is a rewarding river to explore.
A tributary of the Great Ouse, the Ivel was once navigable for boats past Sandy and Biggleswade. Then, south of there, a branch canal headed off to Shefford.
Both the river and the canal have long since fallen out of use, but the Ivel remains a charming waterway. Attractive riverside paths offer a way for you to discover this little-known countryside and explore the traces of the old navigation.
You can find out much more about things to do along the Ivel at the Ivel & Ouse Countryside Project website.
