River Aire

Bridge over the River Aire, Leeds

From Bank Dole to the River Ouse the 22.5 miles of link between the Aire & Calder and River Ouse was once the main route from Leeds to the Humber. Compared with the long straight cuts along the Aire & Calder the River Aire follows a very twisting route.

The surrounding countryside is often hidden behind banks. At Haddlesey the Selby Canal takes the navigation to Selby whilst the River Aire continues via a tidal section, inaccessible since the closure of Haddlesey Old Lock, to the Ouse at Asselby Island.
