Two separate streams form the Adur - the Western Adur, rising in Slinfold through Shipley and West Grinstead, and the Eastern Adur, rising on Ditchling Common and passing betweeen Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill. Both streams join at Henfield and flow on to the sea through the Shoreham Gap Valley - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Today Shoreham is still an important south coast port administered by Shoreham Port Authority. Principal cargoes are timber, refined oil and gravel dredged from the sea. Boating, windsurfing and canoeing are all popular activities here as well as along other parts of the river.
