Channel Codding With Barham

I enjoyed my first sea fishing trip in a couple of years last Friday – heading out of Penarth in South Wales in the hope of some cod with Boat Fishing Monthly editor Dave Barham, who used to work within papar throwing distance of me at DHP.
The cod head into the Bristol Channel at this time of year and the run goes right through to around March.
For various reasons mainly down to them not being hammered by the commercial boats like they used to, the cod fishing has been on the up for the last couple of years. Our guide for the day was Welsh skipper Rob Rennie who runs the super fast Lady Jue III (www.customcharter.co.uk).
He fishes out of Swansea in the summer and includes the ever improving blue shark fishing close to the Gulf Stream off the Welsh coast in his repertoire ( I hear great things about this fishing), before moving to Penarth for the winter for the cod. The guy clearly knows his onions, because on a day when many struggled we had a real red letter day, boating around 45 cod, half of them ‘keepers’ in the 3-6lb bracket plus a few conger and whiting.
It was all uptiding work with worm baits and we got some great content for Sea Watch Monthly, which is the monthly video magazine for sea anglers that you can watch for free here on Total-Fishing.com (http://www.total-fishing.com/videos/sea-watch-monthly) .

Evesham Dates
The dates are out for the 2012 series of qualifiers for the Evesham Festival backed by Daventry based publisher of angling magazines, DHP Ltd.The annual event sees several big team and individual matches take place over the August bank holiday weekend, including the prestigious Shakespeare Championships and Wychavon Championship won by Andrew Murphy and Coventry’s Jon Arthur respectively in 2011. There are events on December 28th, February 25th and March 10th but things kick off in earnest in June and run right through until August 12th. There’s a full list of qualifier dates in the Forthcoming Matches forum on Total-Fishing.comhttp://www.total-fishing.com/phpbbforum/viewforum.php?f=49 – or email diana@raphael.wyenet.co.uk for more details.

Cracking Match On The River Severn
A cracking Birmingham Anglers Association match fished on the River Severn at Arley saw the top three weigh in over 50lb. Colin Harvey drew the end peg in the float only match where he waggler fished maggot for three chub and 11 barbel and an excellent 64lb return. Daiwa Gordon League’s Brian Pollard also had a great day, weighing in 51-12-0 and Droitwich angler Bob McAulay took 50-2-0 to the scales. The recent rain should bring the river into tip top condition and there should be some great running water sport on the cards this weekend.

Big Barbel On The Pole
Meanwhile the Warwickshire Avon has produced a fine 12lb 3oz barbel to Midlander Richie Barker... on the pole. Richie was fishing double red maggot hook bait on just a size 16 hook and 3.2lb line and took about 20 minutes to tire out the personal best fish on a size 6-8 elastic more suited to fish up to about 3lb. The personal best fish came from the Stratford stretch of the Midlands waterway.

Preston’s Love Their Fishing
Midlands based tackle manufacturer Preston Innovations is backing a new scheme to get more young people into fishing. The ‘I Love Fishing’ campaign will see starter kits introduced into the marketplace to drive newcomers to an online Korum Club giving advice on venues and techniques. It’s also supported by a new television series on Sky Sports fronted by Nigel Botherway.Preston Innovations managing director Sarah Phoenix said: “It will tackle the problem that the average age of angler in the UK is between 45 and 50 and will bring younger people in. We really need to increase the number of people going fishing. We want to promote fishing as a lifestyle choice – a recreational family activity.” For more information go to www.club-korum.co.uk .

Tight Frame At Dog Lane
Dog Lane Fishery has a very good head of slivers and always fishes well through the colder months, and the first of a series of winter events took place at the weekend. Indeed it’s already proved so popular that bait company Bag ‘em has stepped in with some welcome sponsorship.Sunday’s Silvers League saw a very tight frame with the top two separated by just 3.5oz – Daventry AC’s Rich Wills coming out on top with 12-4-8 of roach taken on pinkie on peg 38.Rich and second placed Gil Corns caught from the word go, Gil fishing squatt on peg 14 but taking the odd better quality roach on caster for a 12-1-0 total. Rugby Tackle’s Rob Cash was third on 10-6-0 – and he fished differently again using a chopped worm and caster approach for his bag of roach and orfe from peg 10. The orfe at the Napton fishery now run up to 4lb.Andy Judd caught the biggest perch of the match at 2lb 2oz from peg 2 and went home £93 better off.The first of the pairs series kicks off this weekend and both the Silvers and Pairs matches run through until April. Dates can be found on the Total-Fishing.com website on the Forthcoming Matches forum.

Lures Take Fur And Feather
The popular annual Ravensthorpe Fur And Feather took place on Sunday and produced some fine sport. Winning pair Pat Flynn and Pete Webb took12 fish for a combined weight of 28lb 13oz by fishing sinking lines and short leaders in the main bowl with green and white lures. That was only just too good for Kevin Cook and Gordon Bramwell who took 26lb 14oz of trout.

Best Rainbow To Huckvale
At Packington trout fishery the fish are more spread out on Cocks Close but the hotspots are still the high bank and the lodge end of the pool. On the members’ waters, Great Pool has been really good, with the jetty side of the pool fishing best. On Park Meadow, the deeper water in the middle of the pool is the best area.Best tactics have been black or white lures fished on an intermediate line. Other patterns that are catching well are Bloodworm, Gold Head Damsel, black Buzzer, Montana Nymph and Diawl Bach. The best fish of the week was an 8lb 8oz rainbow caught by Richard Huckvale of Coventry, who was bank fishing Cocks Close using a Cats Whisker lure fished on an intermediate line. Boat angler Kevin Brookes of Tamworth had fish of 7lb and 4lb in a nine-fish catch on Cocks Close; all to a Damsel Nymph fished on a floating line.Michael Lloyd of Coventry fished from a boat on Great Pool and caught a 5lb rainbow amongst a nine-fish haul using a black Buzzer fished on a floating line.

Quality Fish Chasing Fry
The fly fishing has been particularly good at Ravensthorpe in the last week with quality trout now feeding hard on fry and an excellent rod average of 4.64 fish per angler. Boat anglers have been taking some superbly conditioned rainbows by fishing lures at all depths, with the best areas Island to Catwalk and Dome bushes.Fish are still moving in the shallows and around the old weed beds, although now that the temperature is dropping they may move back into deeper water. Fish a Minky or Zonker pattern in green and white for best results. Mick Griffin and Graham Smith took 11 fish on Saturday morning fishing floating lines and white booby Minkies.  The dam has produced fish to Cats Whisker, Black and Green and Damsels. Carl Long waded to the Island to take two nice fish on green Diawl Bachs.Boat prices have been reduced in November to £17 for the day but note that the last day of boat fishing at Ravensthorpe is on Sunday November 20th and there is no boat fishing allowed for the next two Fridays. Bank fishing is available every day up to and including 31 December. The brown trout season has now ended and all browns need to be returned safely to the water.
