RYA launches two great new publications at PSP Southampton Boat Show

RYA Passage Planning and RYA Offshore Sailing...

At the start of the week (Sunday 18) the RYA unveiled not only a brand new title but also introduced a brand new author; Peter Chennell, when they launched the new RYA Passage Planning publication.

Speaking with BBC H2O programme presenter Tracey Clarke, Peter, who works as RNLI Sea Safety Manager, explained why he decided to write the book.

“A part of the work I do with the RNLI is about small boat safety and part of that is passage planning which is also a legal obligation for every vessel on every journey, which is part of the SOLAS 5 regulations.  So I’ve written this book to help people with their passage planning.”

When asked how it went writing his first book Peter explained: “Well there was lots of typing, but with help from friends and the RYA the book finally came together.

“My favourite part of the book is the ‘what went right’ versus ‘what went wrong’ section which is like a parallel universe of good and bad seamanship.”

Aimed at the average sailor the key themes of the book are tides, weather and geography.

RYA Publications Manager Steen Ingerslev commented: “We are delighted that Peter has joined our team of distinguished authors offering a new perspective on this essential subject.”

Another great title

Then on Saturday 24 the RYA launched another new title, the RYA Offshore Sailing Book.

Author, Dick McClary, joined the team on the stand and after a quick quiz he explained how the book was packed with useful information for anyone considering going offshore.

When asked what constituted an offshore sailor Dick explained:  “Anyone who has crossed the Channel could consider themselves an offshore sailor.  There is so much going on when you cross the Channel that anyone who successfully makes the trip could consider themselves an offshore sailor.”

When asked about his favourite chapter Dick jokingly commented about his chapter on making the best rum punch, but unfortunately this didn’t make it to the final edit!

The Offshore Sailing Book covers the fundamental characteristics of what does and what doesn’t make a good offshore cruising yacht and ensures that there is a perfect balance of practical information on safety, equipment, boat design and sails both for monohulls and multihulled boats. There is also excellent advice on how a skipper can make the journey as comfortable as possible for them and their crew.

“This is a great book, written by someone with a wealth of offshore experience from all over the world.  It will appeal particularly to those planning to make an ocean crossing for the first time, as Dick brings his experiences to life through the pages of the book” explained Steen.
