Course overview

Designed to provide the skills, knowledge, and practical hands on experience to start a successful career as a junior marine engineer.

Graduates will gain a broad understanding of engineering disciplines and the practical hands on skills essential to the maintenance and operation of modern vessels.

On completion of the training, graduates would be able to work as Flotilla Engineer or Base Engineer for yacht charter companies. Alternatively, they could join a large yacht as Second Engineer or dual Deckhand/Engineer.

Pre requisite experience

An interest in mechanics and how things work is an advantage

Qualify for

Work as a marine engineer afloat or in a shore-based capacity

Syllabus

Practical training afloat

  • 10 days on board 104ft MY Hatherleigh, taking part in watch keeping, passage planning from an engineer’s perspective and emergency exercises
  • Powerboat training and small tender handling

Shore based training

  • Essential engineering skills
  • Engine room watch keeping practices, pre-sailing checks on engine room machinery, refuelling procedures, recording data for use in diagnostic fault finding, logical fault
    finding procedures
  • Precision measuring equipment, hand tool fitting exercise, use of hand tools
  • Welding skills: oxyacetylene cutting and welding, brazing and soldering, arc welding, inert gas welding
  • Training towards MCA Marine Engine Operators License (MEOL)
  • Electrics and electronics

  • Practical and theoretical knowledge covering everything from basic 12V DC systems to three-phase 440V AC distribution systems and personal computer systems
  • Hotel services

  • Operating principles and diagnostics of air conditioning and refrigeration, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, auxiliary heating boilers, water makers and water systems
  • Ship stability and construction

  • Features of ship construction and implications of fluid transfer and storage
  • Maintenance of yacht systems including propulsion systems, engine room equipment, outboard engines, plumbing, pumps, valves, pipeline systems
  • Navigation and communication

  • Essential crewing and navigation skills
  • Satellite communications systems
