The non-mock Tudor! Couple learn plumbing, tiling and carpentry to build an authentic 16th Century home from scratch for £200,000

Walk past Ray and Michele Blundell’s home near Lichfield in Staffordshire, and you might think you had stepped back 450 years.
It is in the classic, half-timbered, Elizabethan style - built on an oak frame, with an ancient tiled roof, and the first floor teetering over the ground floor.
In fact, the cottage is only 14 years old. What’s more, the Blundells built the whole thing from scratch, teaching themselves plumbing, electrical wiring and medieval carpentry into the bargain.
Oh, and they also carved a majestic garden out of a dreary third-of-an-acre plot, which had only three plum trees and a lawn when they bought it. And all for only £200,000.
Thanks to their efforts, it’s worth more than £600,000. But they’re not selling.
‘We’d both come out of divorces and had no money,’ says Ray, 69, about their 1998 decision.
Ray was a sales director while Michele, 48, worked at a children’s nursery as they built the house. ‘We were looking for something to renovate. But, because everything was grade II-listed, we couldn’t make the changes we wanted. So we decided to build it instead.
‘I always liked drinking in old English pubs, with inglenook fireplaces,’ Ray says, ‘and oak is so tactile.’ In fact, Ray has since built another two - and sold them on - just down the road. But, to begin with, he and Michele were pretty much in the dark.

In response to the lack of affordable housing in London, Bartlett student Matt Lucraft has proposed an evolving self-built housing co-operative based on a mishmash of English vernacular and historic Japanese architecture.
The Dagenham Breach Housing Co-operative seeks to address London's current property crisis by offering an open-source modular system that could be used to build customisable houses cheaply and quickly.
Taking the form of treehouse-like structures arranged around shared gardens, the buildings could be gradually extended as required by tacking on additional modules.

Tudor Revival architecture
The Tudor Revival architecture of the 20th century (commonly called mock Tudor in the UK) first manifested itself in domestic architecture beginning in the United Kingdom in the mid to late 19th century based on a revival of aspects of Tudor style. It later became an influence in some other countries, especially the British colonies. For example, in New Zealand, the architect Francis Petre adapted the style for the local climate. Elsewhere in Singapore, then a British colony, architects such as R. A. J. Bidwell pioneered what became known as the Black and White House. The earliest examples of the style originate with the works of such eminent architects as Norman Shaw and George Devey, in what at the time was thought of as a neo-Tudor design.
Tudorbethan represents a subset of Tudor revival architecture; the word is modelled on John Betjeman's 1933 coinage of the "Jacobethan" style, which he used to describe the grand mixed revival style of circa 1835–1885 that had been called things like "Free English Renaissance". "Tudorbethan" took it a step further, eliminated the hexagonal or many-faceted towers and mock battlements of Jacobethan, and applied the more domestic styles of "Merrie England", which were cosier and quaint. Outside of North America, Tudorbethan is also used synonymously with Tudor revival and mock Tudor.

In response to the lack of affordable housing in London, Bartlett student Matt Lucraft has proposed an evolving self-built housing co-operative based on a mishmash of English vernacular and historic Japanese architecture. The Dagenham Breach Housing Co-operative seeks to address London's current property crisis by offering an open-source modular system that could be used to build customisable houses cheaply and quickly. Taking the form of treehouse-like structures arranged around shared gardens, the buildings could be gradually extended as required by tacking on additional modules. Thanks to their efforts, it’s worth more than £600,000. But they’re not selling.
‘We’d both come out of divorces and had no money,’ says Ray, 69, about their 1998 decision.
Ray was a sales director while Michele, 48, worked at a children’s nursery as they built the house. ‘We were looking for something to renovate. But, because everything was grade II-listed, we couldn’t make the changes we wanted. So we decided to build it instead.
‘I always liked drinking in old English pubs, with inglenook fireplaces,’ Ray says, ‘and oak is so tactile.’ In fact, Ray has since built another two - and sold them on - just down the road. But, to begin with, he and Michele were pretty much in the dark.

Another day where i combined my daily exercise with exploring, getting a quick peek inside the now renovated 'Tanyard Barn' which i explored back in early Octob...
Another day where i combined my daily exercise with exploring, getting a quick peek inside the now renovated 'Tanyard Barn' which i explored back in early October 2014, then i also got permission from the owner (Mr Bob Fidler) to take a look at what little is left of the now infamous, hidden behind haystacks while being built, mock Tudor castle/property...'Honeycrock Farmhouse' which was currently being demolished for legal reasons, it has to be taken down by this Monday the 6th June 2016, after a 4 year long battle in Her Majesty's High Court of Justice, in The Strand, London, England & losing, this will be up soon in a separate short video, then a visit to a new property, which i was keeping an eye on, although this was a no-entry to the interior, it was still full of nice bits & bobs outside & then the day after, (3-6-2016) i was chatting to a very nice local farmer, i was given permission to visit & explore the private forest anytime, home to a legendary white hart deer i'm told, which is more of another interest of mine, all things nature, wildlife & the countryside, it's certainly been great to be out seeing lot's of it of late, as i try to lose some excess timber that i had gained over the past few years, (6 weeks in) so far so good, = 32lb loss, imagine! that's equivalent to 16 bags of sugar in my backpack i was hauling around, still motivated to lose lots more & eat & live healthily again. The external hard drive, is due next week, so that should free up much needed space on my PC, lots of footage waiting to be edited in the coming weeks & months. Thanks to everyone for your support over this period of life-changes, eventually it should pay off & i can explore some more remote places & one's with lots of stairs, without needing an oxygen mask;) Have yourselves a great summer!!

This event will focus on British-influenced architecture in Argentina following the recognition of the country’s independence by English Foreign Minister George Canning in 1825. As a result of the trade agreements, throughout the Victorian period, British engineers built most of Argentina’s infrastructure, including railways, port facilities, industrial plants and sports infrastructure. Eventually a domestic architecture evolved, based on the then popular suburban Mock Tudor. Postwar innovations in British planning were transferred to the teaching of architecture and architectural practice in Argentina during those years, triggering a second period of British influence.

To understand this risky experiment, presenter Dr Lucy Worsley has been given access to treasures from the Royal Collection as they are prepared for a new exhibition at the Queen's Gallery, Buckingham Palace - providing a rare and personal insight into George I and his feuding dynasty.
The Hanoverians arrived at a moment when Britain was changing fast. Satirists were free to mock the powerful, including the new royals. The Hanoverians themselves were busy early adopters of Neo-Palladian architecture, defining the whole look of the Georgian era. When the French philosopher Voltaire visited, he found a 'land of liberty' unlike anything in Europe - Britain was embracing freedom of speech and modern cabinet government.
