Nick Awde & Desert Hearts – Black and Blue (rough demo)
BLACK AND BLUE, from the album Blues for Blighty (Demos for Life, Vol 2), songs for the bruised, the bewildered and the hopeful by Nick Awde & Desert Hearts
I really like this one. Even though it's a VERY rough mix, with everything thrown in, the emotion still comes through. In a way it's the follow-up to Song for England, revealing a bit more why England wants to wake up and stop dreaming: is it an elegy to an overbearing lover or is it about standing up to what life itself throws at you? Could be both of course. And then I also like Black and Blue technically, because it's in all Major 7 chords which create a tense but lush backdrop to the melody and lyrics. CLOSE TO THE ED IN 5 MINUTES! A day/night in the life of Edinburgh Festival critic Nick Awde – wandering the World's Festival City in between shows. SONG FOR ENGLAND, from the album Blues for Blighty (Demos for Life, Vol 1) by Nick Awde & Desert Hearts – details & lyrics below.

Nick Awde & Desert Hearts – England My England (rough demo)
Here’s another raw demo from Nick Awde & Desert Hearts.
Listening time: just 1:28 minutes of your day.
Style: Faux folk!
What to listen out for: I wrote this in 1992...
Will I like it?: Should do, it’s fun as well as serious.
England My England is off the ‘Selling England by the Pound’ EP. It's a folk lament that was written when I was working on the monolithic construction site that was Canary Wharf, when they were building all the glass and steel towers there on the old concrete docks. Nothing worked properly in the UK, the whole country was being sold off, and yet money flowed almost everywhere — and the price of cappuccinos went through the roof.
Musicians: Nick Awde (me) on vocals, guitar, keyboards.

I have to shamefully admit that there is a great slow rock version knocking around, recorded by the first line-up of Desert Hearts with Leo Katana on guitars and Andy Matthews on bass, both amazing talents. But I wanted to see what a more intimate version would sound like, so this is my personal version. My apologies lads and I'll see if I can find the original! Musicians: Nick Awde (me) on vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards & photography... I can’t remember who sang the female vocal, the backing male vocal, or who played the drums (it was a long time ago! all info gratefully received). Recorded by John Warrener at Channel Studios, backing vocals recorded by Knox. Lyrics are below.

Black and Blue
(words & music by Nick Awde)
Black and blue
With every single thing you do
Every time you try to use me
Why do you have to go confuse me?
Black and blue
Black and blue...
Round and round
Upside down and inside out
Tortured love that always hurtles
In never-ending circles
Inside out
Upside down...
Blue and black
Turn my back and dodge the flack
With every little scene you steal
Time and time you make me feel
Blue and black
Black and blue...
‘Blighty’ is a word for Great Britain as a homeland. It came to symbolise the country when you’re not there, the home you want to go back to, the long journey from overseas — and not always for the best of reasons. When you’re not here, you’re always over there, separated, somewhere over the horizon. And that’s the nature of island dwellers: they can’t help taking it with them wherever they go.
And ‘Demos for Life'? Because these are unpolished demos, rough, with fluffed lines, bum notes and all. With the hope that you’ll appreciate them. Because if they all waited to be perfect, they'd never step out and no one would ever know they existed. Because life’s like that.

She stands in the queue by the counter
She catches my eye who knows why
So I’m wondering right now what she’ll
order
She’ll go for a mocha I somehow just
knew.
Starbucks ‘Paree’, by the Opera
Espressos that hiss wifi schmooze
And the soundtrack’s Sinatra and Ella
The question’s eternal – “Que voulez-vous?”
Like a lightning bolt of recognition
She sparked echoes of someone I knew
Couleur Café, Gap and Zara’s there too
Moët et Chandon, and Three Colours Blue
She searches her bag for a moment
Her mobile screen’s now all aglow
That urban veneer quickly flees with a tear
Brushed away, oh that no one else sees.
As she looks up, her sad eyes touch mine
That once in a million true look
A flicker of soul mates, a flash in our
hearts
Hopes and fears of a lost wounded love.
“Ma’mzelle, c’est un mocha pour vous?”
She takes the grande, a sigh heaved
Another alert as another text beeps
Now a smile on her lips as she leaves.
A flash of your smile...
Those eyes, that hair, that dress debonair
A flash of your eyes and she smiled
As the car screeched to a halt in the late
December rain…
The hotel where we stayed was the other
side there
It’s now called Le Grand Majestic
And here was our café, an accordionist
played
Tunes that made cold nights warm in
Paris.
In that corner we drank kir I remember
The snapshots that day made us laugh
You said it was strange you were smiling in
each
Well who’d blame you if our happiness
lasts?
Our room with a view for tired lovers
Flying from separate worlds
It gave us a haven as the stormclouds
rolled over
To think over which direction to turn.
Saw the sights but with eyes for each
other
And we never quite made Père Lachaise
Where Edith and Jim and Maria lie still
But their music danced all over the place.
Breathless we ran across the Pont-Neuf
Belle de Jour in the Dome Lafayette
Caught the melodies there of Piaff, Brel
and Brassens
Traced the echoes of La Mistinguett.
Chocolat et croissants in the Latin Quarter
Glaces avec café at Montmartre
Then exhausted collapsed in this bistro still
hungry
For the taste of last night’s embrace.
The last time ever I saw your face...
The last time ever I saw your face...
You laughed and placed your hand in my
wallet
So eager to pay, then to our room
Then out fell my past with the cards that
photo
You demanded “Who’s this?” at her face.
I wanted to say she’s the past long behind
me
But you know how the words come out
wrong
Perhaps I was clinging to the options that
root us
I still said “It’s not her that I love.”
Words I believed yet so hollow
You cried you’d never trust me again
And rushed out with tears in the raindrops
unseeing
Wounded beauty in the Parisian rain.
I ran after to hold you tight in my arms
To tell you, it’s not how it seems
That always I’d be yours forever you’d be
mine
But I lost you instead for all time...
A flash of your smile...
Those eyes, that hair, that dress debonair
A flash of your eyes and you turned, too
late
The car screeched to a halt in the late
December rain…
A flash of your smile...
Those eyes, that hair, that dress debonair
A glimpse of your eyes then she turned
away forever…
“Bon soir chérie!” kissed now through the
window
The Citroën pulled up, she jumped in
I saw the embrace with the man at the
wheel
They drove off in the Parisian rain…
The last time ever I saw your face...
The last time ever I saw your face...

SONG FOR ENGLAND, from the album Blues for Blighty (Demos for Life, Vol 1) by Nick Awde & Desert Hearts – details & lyrics below.
This is a gentle nudge to a tired, bruised nation the morning after... and who starts to wake up in more ways than she expected. I originally meant it to be the opening number for the musical I’ve Seen That Movie Too (which I wrote in 1999, still to be performed – the song itself is from a few years before). At the end of the musical, it's repeated as Song for England (It’s My Life!), an epic eight-minute version that closes on a mega upbeat that contrasts with the quiet uncertainty here. Musicians: Nick Awde (me) on vocals, guitar, bells & photography, Ian Mulcahey on keyboards, Knox did the recording... and lamentably I can’t remember who sang the female vocal part (it was a long time ago! All info gratefully received). Lyrics are below.
Blues for Blighty (Demos for Life Vols 1, 2 & 3) — Songs for the bruised, the bewildered and the hopeful, reflected across three volumes. Let me know if you want to be on the mailing list – info@deserthearts.com / @nickawde
Song for England
(words & music by Nick Awde)
Wake up England dear, it’s another day
Time for all good girls and boys to play
Time to stretch and stir
You’ve slept all your tears
All your fears and your troubles away
(Come what may...)
Sit up and stretch,
Step out your nice warm bed
It’s time for you to clear your sleepy head
No more time, no, ahead...
I, I want to live my life
I want to live my life not dream
I want to fly high
Don’t want to see sundown
I want to live my life not dream
I want to live my life not dream.

And ‘Demos for Life'? Because these are unpolished demos, rough, with fluffed lines, bum notes and all. With the hope that you’ll appreciate them. Because if they all waited to be perfect, they'd never step out and no one would ever know they existed. Because life’s like that.
Song for England
(words & music by Nick Awde)
Wake up England dear, it’s another day
Time for all good girls and boys to play
Time to stretch and stir
You’ve slept all your tears
All your fears and your troubles away
(Come what may...)
Sit up and stretch,
Step out your nice warm bed
It’s time for you to clear your sleepy head
No more time, no, ahead...
I, I want to live my life
I want to live my life not dream
I want to fly high
Don’t want to see sundown
I want to live my life not dream
I want to live my life not dream.

ENGLAND MY ENGLAND
(Words/music by Nick Awde)
My country is a sad country
Where people talk of cars and sales,
Prices and mortgages,
And the way everyone else fails.
My country is a sad country
Where our decaying pride
Becomes more and more replaced
By fear as we realise there’s nowhere left to hide.
My country is a sad country
Where the lionheart’s become the duck
That laid the egg of gold.
Where a reasonably workable
Alliance of individuals
Has now become
A squabble of selfish bastards.
What a sad country ...

I don't want you to tell me the truth, babe
I don't want you to tell me no lies
But just keep on gazing with those great big browns
'Cos you got Carrie Fisher's eyes
Rip van Winkle'll snap out of his sleep yeah!
You'd even make a grown man weep
'Cos you kiss better, yes you kiss better
You kiss better than...
Meryl Streep...Meryl Streep
I don't want you to give me an inch, dear
I don't want you to give me a mile
But just fall into a sweet, sweet dive
'Cos you've got Kim Deal's smile
Rip van Winkle'll snap out of his sleep yeah!
You'd even make a grown man weep
'Cos you kiss better, yes you kiss better
You kiss better than Meryl Streep
Meryl Streep...Meryl Streep
I don't want you to give me your name, girl
I don't want you to answer my calls
But just keep singing sweet rock'n'roll
'Cos you've got Gina Gershon's balls
Rip van Winkle'll snap out of his sleep yeah!
You'll even make a grown man weep
'Cos you kiss better, yes you kiss better
You kiss better than
Meryl Streep...yes you do

“Marvin it’s time you should go now
The ferry sails with the high tide
The tears that you see must be
Salt wind in my eyes.
Anger welled up in my sad heart
When the west winds blew claiming you back
But I’m glad that you’re strong now,
It’s time to change tack.
You were washed up struck silent by snow waves
We bathed you in music and light
You found your voice with us, now
You’re back in the fight.”
Hey, you’re sailing far off today
But I see stormclouds on their way
So Godspeed my friend, it’s not the end
And we’ll meet again one day.
“Freddy it hurts me to go now
The sirens we both hear their call
I’m a fighter don’t worry,
This time I won’t fall.
I was shipwrecked and drifting in deep seas
The world washed me up at your door
You dried me out, healed me
Here on safe shores.
I found freedom out here on the beach sands
Where the Kursaal lights up the grey skies
A beacon for lost souls
On the grapevine.”
Hey, you’re sailing far off today
But I see stormclouds on their way
So Godspeed my friend, it’s not the end
And we’ll meet again one day.
