Understanding Biosafety Levels
SVG images are created using Adobe Illustrator
Bio safety levels are a set of bio containment controls that are required to separate the biological agents based on the risk they cause on the environment, and human beings.
These levels are ranked from one to four. Each level has specific controls for containment of biological agents and microbes. The controls are based on the infectivity of the disease, severity of the disease, source of the agent and route of invasion into human body.
These bio safety levels play an important role in designing the facility, safety environment, and laboratory practices.
Each bio safety level has its own standard laboratory practices that one must follow. However, each microbiology laboratory, irrespective of their bio safety level, must follow the basic...

What are the different biosafety levels (BSL) in a lab - CytoSMART Academy
In this presentation we will explain what the different biosafety levels (BSL) are in a lab. We will explain in depth what the different safety measures are in these biosafety levels. In short there are four different BSL levels:
BSL-1 Low risk organisms that pose little to no threat of infection. (e.g. E Coli, cell lines)
BSL-2 Human diseases that pose a moderate health hazard (e.g. Hepatitis B, primary cells.
BSL-3 Microbes that can cause serious or potentially lethal disease through inhalation. (e.g. COVID-19)
BSL-4 Highly dangerous, fatal, and exotic microbes (e.g. Ebola)

A glimpse at Wuhan's top-level biosafety lab
The Wuhan Institute of Virology has been at the center of COVID-19 speculation across the world. Some of the theories say that the coronavirus originated from its lab and that its researchers secretly sold experimental animals in the wet market. CGTN visits the institute's top-level biosafety lab and talks to a senior official there who has dismissed the accusations.
