Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) | Renal System
In this video, Dr Mike explains that every minute your kidneys receive 1,000mL of blood from the heart (20% of cardiac output). Of this 1,000mL around 400mL are cells (kidneys don't care about this) and 600mL is blood plasma (kidneys care about this). Only 20% of this 600mL is filtered into the nephron (120mL) every minute!!

Glomerular filtration rate
----------------------------------------
Description: the rate at which fluid is filtered by the kidneys
Normal GFR
♂ 95–145 mL/min/1.73m2
♀ 75–125 mL/min/1.73m2
The GFR physiologically declines with age.
GFR depends on the effective filtration pressure and is driven by the difference between hydrostatic and osmotic pressure
EFP = (PGC – PBS) – (πGC – πBS)]
GC = glomerular capillary
BS = Bowman space
P = hydrostatic pressure
π = osmotic pressure
πBS normally equals 0
Normal effective filtration pressure is 13 mm Hg
Starling equation for the glomerulus: Jv = Kf × [(PGC - PBS) - σ(πGC - πBS)]
