From 2010 to 2012, she starred as Tyana Jones on the TV One original sitcom Love That Girl!, and has had a recurring role as Roxanne on the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless.
Ali was born in North Bellmore, New York, the eldest daughter (she has two younger sisters) of Sonia, a nurse, and Sheriff Ali, a police detective. Her mother is Afro-Panamanian and her father is Indo-Trinidadian.
By the age of six, she had begun her acting career, as a regular child performer on Sesame Street starting in 1985, even appearing with Herbie Hancock in a musical number. She also appeared twice on Star Search. She made her breakthrough when she was cast as Ashley Banks for the television sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1990. She sang on various episodes of the show, including a heavily altered version of Aretha Franklin's "Respect" and the original song, "Make Up Your Mind" produced by Robert Jerald of N'Spyre Music Productions. Will Smith asked her if she seriously considered pursuing a musical career. Despite her singing ability, she concentrated on her acting career on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air the next few years. In the final season of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1995–96), Ali began preparing herself for her musical debut. The result was the album Kiss The Sky, which was certified gold in early 1999. The album spawned the hit song "Daydreamin'", released July 21, 1998, produced by Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the UK Singles Chart.
Kiss the Sky is the debut album by American singer and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air actress Tatyana Ali. The album was released in August 1998, peaking at #106 on the Billboard 200 and #47 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album produced the top ten Billboard Hot 100 hit "Daydreamin', as well as the smash hit UK single "Boy You Knock Me Out", and pop-ballad "Everytime". The album was certified Gold in early 1999, however, did not sell as well as expected, and as such, Ali was dropped from the label in late 1999. The album was made with the help of her Fresh Prince co-star and rapper Will Smith.
Allmusic gave the album two and a half stars out of five, claiming: "History has often taught us that when an actor or actress decides to record an album, consumers had best be on their guard and proceed with caution. But in some cases, actors are also worthwhile singers. A case in point is Tatyana Ali, who is best known for playing Ashley on the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. After establishing herself as an actress, Ali entered the urban contemporary field with Kiss the Sky, for which Will "The Fresh Prince" Smith is an executive producer. Although not fantastic and not very risk-taking, the collection of [contemporary R&B]/pop demonstrated that Ali was a decent singer along the lines of Janet Jackson. This isn't to say that the album is as interesting as a Jackson album—in fact, most of the material is pretty routine. But Kiss the Sky does contain a few memorable selections, including the sexy 'He Loves Me,' the remorseful 'Through Life Alone,' and the caressing title song. Ali has the potential to make a consistently strong album, but she'll need the right input, guidance, and direction."
Kiss the Sky is a compilation album by American rock guitarist, singer–songwriter Jimi Hendrix; released through Polydor Records in November 1984. The album's title is taken from the lyrics of "Purple Haze." "Red House" was listed in the liner notes as the "unedited version" which amounted to a few seconds of studio chat that preceded the song. "Stepping Stone" was purported to be the original Band of Gypsys single mix, but in fact is an alternate mix that is similar to the single mix. "Killing Floor" from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival was unreleased at the time.
All songs are written by Jimi Hendrix, except where noted.
