Music of the Republic of Macedonia
The music of the Republic of Macedonia and of the Macedonians has much in common with the music of neighbouring Balkan countries, yet maintains a distinctive sound.
Folk music
The ethnic Macedonian folk music (Macedonian: Народна музика, Narodna muzika) includes:
Traditional music
The ethnic Macedonian traditional music, which can be rural or urban (starogradska muzika), includes: lyric songs, epic songs, labour songs, ritual songs, humorous songs, circle dance ("oro"), the old urban style called Čalgija (not to be confused with chalga) etc. Popular traditional songs are: Kaleš bre Angjo, Slušam kaj šumat šumite, Biljana platno beleše, Dafino vino crveno, Narode Makedonski, Zemjo Makedonska and many others. Often referenced oro dances are Teškoto from the village of Galičnik, Kalajdžiskoto, Komitskoto (The Dance of the freedom fighters) and others. An internationally acclaimed professional folklore association is the award winning Tanec.

Macedonians (ethnic group)
The Macedonians (Macedonian: Македонци; transliterated: Makedonci), also known as Macedonian Slavs or Slavic Macedonians are a South Slavic ethnic group native to the region of Macedonia. They speak the Macedonian language, a South Slavic language. About two thirds of all ethnic Macedonians live in the Republic of Macedonia and there are also communities in a number of other countries.
Origins
The "origins" of Macedonians are varied and rich. In antiquity, much of central-northern Macedonia (the Vardar basin) was inhabited by Paionians who expanded from the lower Strymon basin. The Pelagonian plain was inhabited by the Pelagones, an Upper Macedonian peoples; whilst the western region (Ohrid-Prespa) was said to have been inhabited by Illyrian peoples. During the late Classical Period, having already developed several sophisticated polis-type settlements and a thriving economy based on mining, Paeonia became a constituent province of the Argead - Macedonian kingdom. Roman conquest brought with it a significant Romanization of the region. This Roman component would be ever-lasting. During the Dominate period, 'barbarian' federates were at times settled on Macedonian soil; such as the Sarmatians settled by Constantine (330s AD) or the (10 year) settlement of Alaric's Goths. In contrast to 'frontier provinces', Macedonia (north and south) continued to be a flourishing Christian, Roman province in Late Antiquity and into the early Middle Ages.

Macedonian Folk Dance "Gajdarsko oro" - Pece Atanasovski
Petre Vasilev "Pece" Atanasovski was born on October 25, 1927, in the village of Dolneni (near Prilep), Macedonia, the son of Vasile Atanasov Todorovski. (It was the tradition until World War II for a male child to have his second name his father's, and his last name his grandfather's. Thus Pece is "Petre, son of Vasile, son of Atanas." Since the war, however, custom has changed and everone in a family has the same last name. Pece grew up in Dolnani, in a household with nine other children, and lived there until 1944. As a child, he was a shepherd and attended school only through the fourth grade. After that, he would have had to go to Prilep to continue his schooling and his parents would have had to pay. Since the war, however, custom has changed and everone in a family has the same last name. Pece grew up in Dolnani, in a household with nine other children, and lived there until 1944. As a child, he was a shepherd and attended school only through the fourth grade. After that, he would have had to go to Prilep to continue his schooling and his parents would have had to pay. Even so, he was probably more fortunate than many other boys his age, who never learned to read and write.
He began playing instruments at the age of 5 or 6. Many of the men in his family were good musicians on the gajde, kaval, or šupelka, and Pece learned to play all of these instruments, although at first he only played the surla (chanter) part of the gajda.
In 1950, Pece joined the then-forming state dance ensemble "Tanec" as well. He traveled throughout the world with the group, including a trip to the United States, and remained with the ensemble until 1959.
Pece, who died in 1996, is survived by his wife Cena and two daughters, Vesna and Suzana.
Dances Pece taught include Baba Džurdža, Beranče, Berovka, Buvčansko, Crnogorka, Čučuk Oro, Čupurlika, Dolgoto Oro, Kavardaka, Kopačka, Maškoto Oro, Nevestinsko Oro, Odeno Oro, Ovčepolsko Oro,Ratevka, Sitna Lisa, Skudrinka, Staro Oro, Teškoto, Topansko Oro, Toska/Memede, Tropnalo Oro, Žensko Beranče and many more.

* Kosovo is a partially recognised republic. It declared independence from Serbia in 2008, and has since gained diplomatic recognition by 97 member states of the United Nations.
The map chosen is defined by the Soča–Vipava–Krka–Sava–Danube border suggestion. Entirely in the peninsula are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Montenegro and North Macedonia. Mostly in the peninsula are Croatia (southern mainland), Greece (Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Epirus, Central Greece, Peloponnese), Italy (Trieste and Monfalcone), Romania (Dobruja), Serbia (Central Serbia), Slovenia (southwestern part) and Turkey (Eastern Thrace). Italy is not considered a Balkan state. Slovenia is also not considered a Balkan state by ethnologists, due to it being part of the Austro-Hungarian empire thus having Central European mentality and culture. Greece is a Western country with a Mediterranean culture. Even so, its mainland is considered Balkan by ethnologists, for having similar traditions and mentality, but its islands are entirely in the Mediterranean sphere.

* Kosovo is a partially recognised republic. It declared independence from Serbia in 2008, and has since gained diplomatic recognition by 97 member states of the United Nations.
The map chosen is defined by the Soča–Vipava–Krka–Sava–Danube border suggestion. Entirely in the peninsula are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Montenegro and North Macedonia. Mostly in the peninsula are Croatia (southern mainland), Greece (Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Epirus, Central Greece, Peloponnese), Italy (Trieste and Monfalcone), Romania (Dobruja), Serbia (Central Serbia), Slovenia (southwestern part) and Turkey (Eastern Thrace). Greece is a Western country with a Mediterranean culture. Petre Vasilev "Pece" Atanasovski was born on October 25, 1927, in the village of Dolneni (near Prilep), Macedonia, the son of Vasile Atanasov Todorovski. (It was the tradition until World War II for a male child to have his second name his father's, and his last name his grandfather's. Thus Pece is "Petre, son of Vasile, son of Atanas." Since the war, however, custom has changed and everone in a family has the same last name. Pece grew up in Dolnani, in a household with nine other children, and lived there until 1944. As a child, he was a shepherd and attended school only through the fourth grade. After that, he would have had to go to Prilep to continue his schooling and his parents would have had to pay. Even so, he was probably more fortunate than many other boys his age, who never learned to read and write.
He began playing instruments at the age of 5 or 6. Many of the men in his family were good musicians on the gajde, kaval, or šupelka, and Pece learned to play all of these instruments, although at first he only played the surla (chanter) part of the gajda.
In 1950, Pece joined the then-forming state dance ensemble "Tanec" as well. He traveled throughout the world with the group, including a trip to the United States, and remained with the ensemble until 1959.
Pece, who died in 1996, is survived by his wife Cena and two daughters, Vesna and Suzana.
Dances Pece taught include Baba Džurdža, Beranče, Berovka, Buvčansko, Crnogorka, Čučuk Oro, Čupurlika, Dolgoto Oro, Kavardaka, Kopačka, Maškoto Oro, Nevestinsko Oro, Odeno Oro, Ovčepolsko Oro,Ratevka, Sitna Lisa, Skudrinka, Staro Oro, Teškoto, Topansko Oro, Toska/Memede, Tropnalo Oro, Žensko Beranče and many more.

The music of the Republic of Macedonia and of the Macedonians has much in common with the music of neighbouring Balkan countries, yet maintains a distinctive sound.

The ethnic Macedonian folk music (Macedonian: Народна музика, Narodna muzika) includes:
Traditional music
The ethnic Macedonian traditional music, which can be rural or urban (starogradska muzika), includes: lyric songs, epic songs, labour songs, ritual songs, humorous songs, circle dance ("oro"), the old urban style called Čalgija (not to be confused with chalga) etc. Popular traditional songs are: Kaleš bre Angjo, Slušam kaj šumat šumite, Biljana platno beleše, Dafino vino crveno, Narode Makedonski, Zemjo Makedonska and many others. Often referenced oro dances are Teškoto from the village of Galičnik, Kalajdžiskoto, Komitskoto (The Dance of the freedom fighters) and others. An internationally acclaimed professional folklore association is the award winning Tanec.
