Hurricane Helene is gaining strength and is expected to rapidly intensify as it approaches Florida on Thursday. The National Hurricane Center says the storm will bring "catastrophic" winds and storm surge to the northeastern Gulf coast.
FOX 13 Meteorologists say Helene is forecast to reach at least Category 3 strength before it makes landfall in Florida's Big Bend area Thursday night. It continues to move across warm Gulf waters as a Category 2 hurricane.
Hurricane Helene moves closer to Florida
FOX 13 meteorologists Jim Weber and Valerie Mills have the very latest on Hurricane Helene.
As of 11 a.m. on Thursday, Helene was located at 25.5 N and 85.5 W, had maximum sustained winds of 105 miles an hour and was moving north-northeast at 14 miles an hour.
FOX 13 Meteorologist Dave Osterberg said Helene is among the largest storms in the past 20 years, stretching hundreds of miles wide.
Osterberg said Helene's core "had a little bit of a struggle overnight," but pressure continued to drop inside the storm, which is a sign of strengthening. Intensification has become more rapid throughout the morning.
Storm watches and warnings
A hurricane warning is in effect from Anclote River to Mexico Beach. That includes coastal areas of Citrus, Hernando and Pasco counties.
A tropical storm warning has been issued for the rest of the state except the far western Panhandle.
A storm surge warning is in effect for much of Florida's Gulf Coast, including Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor.
All Bay Area counties are under a tornado watch until 8 p.m.
A flood watch is in effect until Friday morning across the Bay Area and much of the state.
A flood warning has been issued for the following rivers in the Bay Area:
Alafia River at Riverview near U.S. 301 affecting Hillsborough County from Thursday evening until Friday morning. Major flooding is forecast.
Little Manatee River at Wimauma at U.S. 301 in Hillsborough County from Friday afternoon until further notice. Minor flooding is forecast.
Manatee River near Myakka Head at SR 64 in Manatee County from Friday afternoon until Saturday evening. Minor flooding is forecast.

When will the worst impacts be felt in the Bay Area?
While some rain bands are moving through the Bay Area on Thursday morning, the strongest impacts from Helene – including significant rain, wind and storm surge – will be felt across the region from around 3 p.m. until after the storm makes landfall, according to Osterberg.
"As the storm passes us, we're really going to get that wind to whip in," Osterberg said. "And that's when the storm surge, as well, is going to be a huge issue."
Storm impacts will lessen heading into Friday after Helene makes landfall to our northwest and moves over land, but Osterberg said tropical moisture will continue to bring passing showers through the weekend.
Helene's potential impacts in the Bay Area
FOX 13 Meteorologists say life-threatening storm surge is expected to be the biggest issue, with the potential to reach 15 feet along the coast from Citrus County northward into the Big Bend, where storm surge could reach "unsurvivable" levels up to 20 feet.

LIVE UPDATES: Hurricane Helene is now CATEGORY 4 making landfall

Hurricane Helene has intensified and is now a major Category 3 hurricane with winds up to 120 mph as it continues on a path that will bring the monster storm into Florida’s Big Bend region with a potentially "unsurvivable" 20-foot storm surge, catastrophic hurricane-force winds and flooding rain later on Thursday night or early Friday morning.
Nearly the entire state of Florida is under some sort of tropical weather alert, with Tropical Storm Warnings extending hundreds of miles inland into Georgia and the Carolinas, including Atlanta.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says that because of Hurricane Helene’s massive size, there is a significant risk of a life-threatening storm surge along the entire west coast of the Florida Peninsula, as well as Florida’s Big Bend region.
"A catastrophic and deadly storm surge is likely along portions of the Florida Big Bend coast, where inundation could reach as high as 20 feet above ground level, along with destructive waves," the NHC warned.
The highest inundation, with as much as 20 feet of storm surge flooding, is expected from Carrabelle to the Suwannee River in Florida, with other locations like Apalachicola and Chassahowitzka forecast to see 10-15 feet of storm surge.
Storm surge is already becoming a problem for Southwest Florida ahead of Helene's landfall.
St. Petersburg and Naples have already reported a storm surge of 2-3 feet, and Hurricane Helene is still more than 200 miles away from the Florida Gulf Coast.
Tampa Bay is expected to see a storm surge of 5-8 feet.
The National Weather Service in Tallahassee issued a dire warning about the potentially deadly storm surge on Thursday morning.
"There is increasing confidence of catastrophic and potentially unsurvivable storm surge for Apalachee Bay," the NWS said. "Storm surge may begin to arrive as early as (Thursday) afternoon ahead of the strongest winds, building through landfall."
NHC Director Dr. Michael Brennan joined FOX Weather on Thursday and urged residents to listen to officials and leave immediately if told to do so.
"The impacts of this storm are on an enormous scale and are going to extend over multiple states all the way up into the Carolinas and southern Appalachians – the storm surge, the hurricane and tropical storm force winds and the potential for catastrophic rainfall," Brennan said.
Brennan brought up Hurricane Michael in 2018 when talking about how deadly and dangerous a storm surge can be.
"When Hurricane Michael hit Mexico Beach in 2018, there were people who waited until that last minute, and people drowned in their cars trying to get away because the water comes up so fast that you cannot get out," Brennan noted. "That's why you should follow those evacuation orders you're given by your local officials and get out ahead of the storm. Much of these areas, you still have time, but that time is rapidly running out."
Earlier this week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued an executive order declaring a state of emergency for 61 of the state’s 67 counties to help agencies prepare for the storm.
Shelters have also been opened for evacuated Florida residents, and the Florida Division of Emergency Management said that as of Wednesday night, about 500 people were seeking safety in a shelter.
And it wasn’t only residents who have been busy preparing – travel is also being impacted.

Currently a powerful Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds over 100 mph, Helene has the potential to strengthen to Category 3 before making landfall Thursday evening. The storm is expected to bring dangerous storm surges, strong winds, and torrential rain, impacting much of northern Florida.
