How much fear/power/respect does organized crime have in the US nowadays? How much fear/power/respect does organized crime have in the US nowadays?

In 2024 are people in places like New York, Philadelphia, Boston, New Jersey, California, Chicago, etc walkin around with some fear about the organized crime families? Do these families get any respect from people not in that life, or even in that life? Do these families have any power in these states and cities anymore?

By organized crime and families I mean the mafia mostly. The Italian families in New York (Gambino, Bonanno, Genovese, Lucchese, Colombo and all the offshoot gangs and families), the Italian families in New Jersey (Campisis, Genovese, DeCavalcante, etc), the Chicago families (The Chicago Outfit, their offshoots, etc), the families in Florida (Trafficante, etc), the families in Louisiana (New Orleans Crime Family, etc), the families in Pennsylvania (Bufalino, Pittsburgh Crime Family, etc), the Boston families (Patriarca, etc), the families in California (Los Angeles Crime Family, San Francisco Crime Family/Lanza, etc), and the countless other Italian mafias in the country.

What about the international Italian organizations that do business in America (and started a lot of the American Italian families) like Camorra, The 'Ndrangheta, Cosa Nostra, etc?

What about other ethnic mafias like the Russian mafias, the Irish mafias, the Jewish mafias? How relevant are they nowadays in these cities/states and how much fear/power/respect do they have? I know Boston was big on Irish mafias and gangs back in the day. My state (Minnesota) used to have a lot of Irish gangsters like Kid Caan (most notorious mobster in Minnesota), as well as having people from The Chicago Outfit like Al Capone hide out here (even rob banks here).

And one more question; what about the all the very large international criminal organizations like The Yakuza and The Triads? How relevant are they? Do they hold any power, fear or respect anymore?

What area should I be considering moving to? (Details in post) What area should I be considering moving to? (Details in post)

We currently live in FL but want to move to NY (obviously have to find jobs first). But are planning to work hybrid in NYC. I am from New City and want to move there in a perfect world, but seems like we would be priced out. Our budget would be around 500k for a house to buy, or like $3250 for rent for a 3/2

We have 2 kids also, and are very concerned about school districts. Would want an amazing district, as that's the #1 reason why we're moving. So I would love New City, Congers or even Pearl River, but seems we're priced out a bit. Any other suggestions that aren't more than an hour from the city? Thanks!

Anyone else receive a letter from the DMV about an insurance lapse after they sold the car in question? Anyone else receive a letter from the DMV about an insurance lapse after they sold the car in question?

I’m not sure how I’m supposed to respond. The website they list doesn’t work and the plates have been returned already (a month after the car was sold). The new driver is my ex husband and the car is still covered by the same insurance, just under his name! How did you resolve this issue?

How come Hempstead is a town and not a city? How come Hempstead is a town and not a city?

I've recently learned of the town and I have shocked to see that it has a population of slightly over 793.000 and it's a town, not a city. Why is it still a town?

From what I can find, it has a larger population (city/urban) then Buffalo (2nd largest city in the state of New York), but also a larger population than St. Louis, Seattle or Portland, to name a few.

I know that the population referenced is the one within city limits and that for the U.S it's more important to look at the metro area population to determine the size of a city, but I still think it's weird that Hempstead is still classified as a town and not a city.

Does Hempstead have some benefits as a town that they would lose as a city? Or would they be required to do some extra things if they were a city, that aren't required of them as a town?
