Pinback is an indie rock band from San Diego, California. The band was formed in 1998 by singers, songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow, who have been its two consistent members. They have released five studio albums and several other releases.
The band's moniker is a reference to a character in the 1974 film Dark Star (played by Dan O'Bannon, who also co-wrote the film), directed by John Carpenter. Audio samples from this film are used frequently in the band's early works.
In 2004, Pinback signed to Touch and Go Records. They released their third album, Summer in Abaddon, later that year. Pinback's fourth full-length album, Autumn of the Seraphs, was released on September 11, 2007. The band also recently released a collection of rarities, entitled Nautical Antiques. They appeared live in a nationally broadcast interview and played a couple of songs on NPR's Talk of the Nation on October 8, 2007. The program is available for download via NPR's website.
This Is A Pinback CD (sometimes referred to as simply Pinback) is the debut album by the indie rock band Pinback. There are at least two different versions of this CD. The first version was released by Ace Fu Records on October 12 1999. Another was released that same year in Europe by Cutty Shark Records. In the latter version two new tracks were added and the track ordering was also modified. Both "Versailles" and 'Byzantine" would later appear on the compilation, "Nautical Antiques".
The song "Hurley" samples drums from the song "It's Expected I'm Gone" by the Minutemen.
The song "Shag" samples drums from the song "Shaggs' Own Thing (Vocal Version)" by the Shaggs
I spent a life time knocking round
the same old patch of concrete,
I waste all my time breaking rocks
and painting smiles on my feet.
I seize the end
for we drift toward the blue shore
send the birds along
I'm not waiting for this day
She's my little sad eyes,
I'm her bluest boy,
She's my little sad eyes,
I'm her bluest boy,
I've become a weapon,
She's my little sad eyes
She's become a toy,
I'm her bluest boy
You may call me a fool
destination to no end
I may cast the anchor
down into the bottom of this well
I dreamt about the train we somehow lost,
That bled those giant marbles made
Of sand for us
I wrote all night, Free man, Alright!
Big Day, All smiles. Burned all their files!
I wrote all night, free man, Alright!
Big Day, All smiles. Burned all their files!
I wrote all night, free man, Alright!
