Ancient Rock Shelter Used for Centuries
On this journey I will take you to a ancient rock shelter which was used first by the early peoples, then by the Pauite and Shoshone when they arrived in the region around 1100CE and as late as 1930 when miners, who worked a local mine, used it as a home until the mine company built them a mining camp.

I headed off into the woods to find somewhere to spend the night. I took my tarp and bivvi bag to be on the safe side but I really wanted to find some natural shelter and practice some survival and bushcraft. Shelter came in the form of a big old rock under a massive oak tree! This was hands down my favourite camp of the year, it was very relaxing and I got a lot out of it. I love lightweight back packing but sometimes it's nice to chuck the wool blanket and lantern in the bag and go full on bushcraft mode.
A massive heartfelt thank you to everyone for the support. I see you!

Bushcraft rock shelter - I visited the ruins of an old cave high in the mountains and slept under a big rock that night. This was a new and interesting experience for me. No talking, only peaceful nature sounds. If you want to find out more about all of these and the story behind this video, please read on.
Already offered some information about my trip in the description of the trailer I uploaded last week. If you haven't seen or read that yet, you can click here:
https://youtu.be/9CCHY0ip8r4
The path towards the ruins of the cave I visited is narrow and steep, this is why it's better to visit the place when the weather is fine - it's hard to climb if it has rained recently, if there are lots of dry leaves on the path (which make it very slippery) or if it has snowed (you might need crampons). You can admire the beauty of the old forest and the rock formations on the way. One of the names of the place I visited could be translated as: "The Ruins of the Cave", but it is also named after one of the monks that lived there in the 15th century. Some historians say it was carved in stone during the 13th century. It was first inhabited by hermits, then by groups of monks until the 18th century. Only the ruins of the cave are visible now - a few niches carved in stone are still visible, they look like small stone windows. Because of the old calcinated human remains (bones) found in the area, some archeologists stated it is possible that human sacrifices were made there during pre-Christian times, others said the bones might belong to our ancestors (the Dacians) who burned their dead, so there might have been an old Dacian tomb there. Not far away from this cave, there is another one, that is named after the same monk. I did not have time to film this cave, because I did not want it to get dark without having prepared a cozy shelter for me to spend the night in, but I will tell you a few things about it and hopefully, I will dedicate it a video sometime in the future, probably next year. Dating from the same period as the Ruins of the Cave, this cave is still well preserved (although the ceiling has fallen), but you can clearly see the carved rooms, windows, wall inscriptions (with names of the rulers of our country and of some other people the monks prayed for) and a carved basement, which was called "the girls' room". It was called that way because the local people hid their girls there during the wars. In 1865 it is said a big treasure was found in that place.
Never slept under a rock before. It was a new experience. Felt a bit scary in the beginning, but once I got used to the place, I liked it. A rock shelter offers you good protection from the wind, probably from the rain also, and is warm enough if you have a good sleeping bag and a good leaves mattress as I had. The place I slept in is not very close to the ruins I visited. Somewhere downhill, in the valley, there must have been a free horse grazing, because I often heard a small bell song. Romanians have the habit to leave their horses free, grazing during summer. I also heard some shepherds and their sheep and goats pass by in the lower regions sometimes when I visited the place, but not that day. The bell sounds are very familiar to me, you will hear big bells or small ones often in my country. I find them relaxing and comforting, a real joy for the soul. When I left my country and lived abroad for some months, the bells' sounds were the ones I missed the most, also missed the sound of rain. When a Romanian leaves his country he will often feel his heart overwhelmed by what we call "DOR" - a sort of nostalgia specific to our people. We will long for our beautiful country and miss it so much, and this will often urge us to come back or at least visit our homeland. There is a song written by a famous Romanian composer (named Ciprian Porumbescu), called "The Ballad" that expresses this specific feeling, this nostalgia. He used to play this song often when he was abroad and missed his beloved country very much. I used to listen to the song whenever I missed my country. When I closed my eyes while listening I sometimes felt I was home again. You can listen to it here if you wish: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oM3Iw5GGQX0
I hope this video offered you some beautiful and peaceful moments, helped you forget all your worries, and encouraged you to dream and hope for a better life. If you did enjoy it, please leave a comment below. I would love to read it. Thanks for watching!
