I'm not a big fan of found footage / handcam style movies, but this one had a great setup and used the style in a unique way. The movie is like a haunted fun house: very low budget, very cheesy, and very entertaining! You can tell it was definitely inspired by the Evil Dead series as well.
I definitely recommend it for any horror comedy fans!

Name a Criterion film whose premise misleads you, whether intentionally or not, into thinking it was going to be about one thing but ended up being about something else.
The Others (2001)
I'll never forget how this film became a much-buzzed-about topic at my middle school when it came out.

People who dug this movie are not insane. I'm shocked at how much I grooved on sections of it and have felt it growing on me, dull texture-less villains notwithstanding. But a great film writer, the (underrated, funny, thoughtful, open-minded, pulp-friendly) critic Outlaw Vern wrote a really cool review for the 2024 one (he also did retrospectives on the whole series this summer). He liked it! He makes a really cool case for it. I like this end quote:
"Of course people will say Brandon Lee was better, but importantly Brandon Lee was different. This is not the Eric who fronts Hangman’s joke, this is the one who plays a little fuzzed out keyboards to encourage Shelly to sing, but admits she can play it better than him. It’s not the Eric who wears leather pants but is nice to kids, it’s the one who maybe burned down his mom’s trailer as a kid and still hasn’t fully adjusted but Shelly thinks he’s “quite brilliantly broken.” Skarsgård makes me sympathetic to that guy and also makes him look cool when he’s a specter on a rampage and let me tell you, none of the guys in the sequels ever pulled off either of those things.
No surprise that this is the best THE CROW since THE CROW. But I think it deserves more credit than that. Some day it might even be acceptable to like it. Buildings burn, people die, but a movie where (SPOILER) the hero comes out covered in blood during the curtain call of an opera and tosses two severed heads into the crowd is forever."

Some highlights from The New York Times:
-
The film’s director, Jon Watts, told Vanity Fair that he had found out about the change in plans only days before the announcement. “The theatrical experience has really made an impression on me, of how valuable this thing is and how important it is,” Mr. Watts said. “I always thought of this as a theatrical movie. We made it to be seen in theaters, and I think that’s the best way to see it.”
-
This month, it released “The Instigators,” with Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, on Apple TV+ after one week of a limited theatrical release. The film helped the streaming service add about 50,000 subscribers, more than the number “Napoleon” accounted for when it was released last year, according to the data firm Parrot Analytics.

Ricky Strauss, Disney’s former president of marketing, was hired last year to oversee creative marketing and strategy, but he reported to executives at company headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., while Mr. Dentler reported to Mr. Van Amburg and Mr. Erlicht in Los Angeles. Mr. Strauss left after 16 months and hasn’t been replaced.

With “Wolfs,” Apple substantially outbid its competitors, according to three people with knowledge of the process, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss financial terms, paying Mr. Clooney and Mr. Pitt more than $35 million each and Mr. Watts (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”) more than $15 million.
-
Apple executives in Cupertino were already questioning the entertainment units over the amount of money being spent on movies, and the people said there was a thought within the company to not risk a public disappointment should the movie not succeed at the box office.
-
This spring, top executives held a meeting at company headquarters. The result was a new edict, according to two people familiar with the details, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an internal gathering. Apple’s studio would make one or two event-size films a year, with big budgets and expansive theatrical releases. The rest of its films would have budgets of $80 million or less, the people said.

I have seen movies as far back as the silent era. I have seen at least 10 films from every decade. Because of this, I get annoyed at work when people tell me they saw an old movie recently and the movie they saw was the year 2000.
It had me wondering, how old does a movie have to be to be considered old?
