What is a cookie?

What are cookies used for?

Required cookies

These are cookies exclusively deposited by the site editor. They are essential for browsing the site. These cookies cannot be deactivated or configured, otherwise you will no longer be able to access the site, the site’s services and/or alter its display. They allow you to use the main features of the site and to secure your connection. The deposit of these cookies does not require your consent. Their lifetime generally does not exceed the session duration.

 

Functional cookies

These cookies are necessary for the proper functioning of the site. The deposit of these cookies does not require your prior consent. These cookies allow:

  • To produce anonymous statistics on the number of visitors accessing and using the site in order to help the editor manage and improve said site.

OpenEdition Books

The OpenEdition Books platform uses a number of third-party services which deposit cookies that OpenEdition does not control. These services are disabled by default and are only activated after the reader has accepted the cookies.

    Description: Allows collection of user’s feedback. Privacy policy

  • Service: Recaptcha
    cookies : _GRECAPTCHA
    Description: Prevents the use of the forms used for “Suggest acquisition to your library” by robots (spam). Privacy policy

  • Service : Hypothes.is
    cookies : _ga, _gid
    Description: Hypothes.is is an annotation service used on some books published on OpenEdition Books. It uses Google analytics for its usage statistics. Privacy policy

  • Service: Inclusion of external content
    Some OpenEdition Books sites include content hosted on other platforms (YouTube, Dailymotion, etc.) that may deposit cookies.
     

OpenEdition Journals

Some OpenEdition Journals sites include content hosted on other platforms (YouTube, Dailymotion, etc.) that may deposit cookies. These services are disabled by default and are only enabled after the reader has accepted cookies.
 

Hypotheses

Some Hypotheses blogs may include third party services, in particular:

  • Content hosted on other platforms (YouTube, Dailymotion, etc.) that may deposit cookies.

  • Social networks services that allow you to share content of the site with other people or to let these other people know your consultation or your opinion about some content of our site.

The cookies placed by these third parties may store the pages and websites you have visited and may collect personal data such as IP address and share it with third parties. These cookies allow advertising companies to present you with targeted and personalized ads.

By default, these services are deactivated. They are activated only after acceptance of the Marketing Cookies. 

 

How to manage cookies set by OpenEdition platforms?

  • Accept or reject unnecessary or non-functional cookies by using the “Cookies” button available at the bottom of your browser window.

  • Control cookies using your browser settings. Most of these cookies can be disabled by setting your browser to only accept cookies from the sites you visit in your browser preferences (refuse “third party sites”, check the “Do not track me” box on most browsers).
