Update: My Career Is No Longer A Disaster, New Job Is Awesome

Previous Post

A lot of you reached out to me referring me. I want to thank you a lot. You guys are gems.

A special thanks to u/Formatterr , who referred me to my current job at a FinTech startup. I owe you a beer.

The people here are damn smart and equally fun. The culture is very open and remote-first. All the founders are very approachable and don’t even mention that they are the founders. Even before I received my laptop, I receive my ticket for the company offsite.

The offsite is when I first interacted with everyone. One of my new colleagues sat next to me and I chatted with him for 3-4 hours. Later on I found that he was in fact the CEO. He didn’t even mention this once nor was there any superiority complex in him when we were chatting. This incident reinforced my decision in joining the company.

Anyways, if you are in the same boat as I was, keep your chin up and keep coding. You will make it.

Ignore the haters and focus on yourself

Peace.

Just lost one of our biggest clients

Just lost one of our biggest clients yesterday (cancelled the majority of their services). They have decided to move their custom WordPress build over to Wix as well as all of their ecommerce sites over to Wix. For in house ease of management. Essentially they’ve switched from a fully custom WordPress build down to a hacked together Wix site. Therefore cancelling maintenance, future work, maintenance retainers as well as managed hosting. Also closed down their custom intranet we built to be replaced by a Facebook group. They’re still keeping some services (60k revenue approx).

This is a loss of around $83k of revenue. They were admittedly somewhat a pain (asking for quotes to be reduced) and new work has dried up over the last few months from them but they were still an overall good client in terms of recurring revenue. Currently can weather it due to building healthy cash reserves but how did everyone else recover from a situation like this? What did you do first to start landing new bigger clients to replace the work lost?

Joined as a developer but company decided to make a consultant

I'm a 2024 grad. I have interned in 2 tier-1 companies and I had also received a PPO but then my PPO was revoked. So I had to join a small startup. I joined as a Trainee developer and after 45 days of my training, my job role was changed to Governance Consultant.

During these 45 days of training, we were trained on a few frameworks and languages and they took regular tests(bizzare but true). I had better score than most of the other trainees and still I was the only one whose job role was changed.

I've expressed my concerns over the job role to the founder and explicitly mentioned my career goals over multiple occasions. However he insists that I can make more money as a consultant than a developer. He says being a developer is overrated.

Currently I do not have any offer in hand but I am looking for one. Should I stay till I find a job or should I quit now and look for a job? Also is my founder right?

CEO wants me to reign in my team lead / manager

My team lead does all the stuff you've probably seen in bad seniors. Lies, filibusters meetings, pushes for pointless rewrites, pits people against each other, plays the victim or hero, etc..

I'm on the grind for a new job, but until then, I'm here. Unless I quit. (Maybe I should just quit).

Anyway, our big golden hammer project is almost a year behind schedule. Every time we have a meeting about it, my manager filibusters it, dodges yes/no questions and responsibility, and writes checks he can't cash.

My manager was late to a status meeting. So, I kicked it off and it was going as well as it could, all things considered. People were talking and collaborating. The energy was good. Then, the guy comes in and sort of sucks the air out of the room. The vibe died as we listened to him yammer for 30 minutes about nothing, never getting to the point, bringing up lots of graphs that most people didn't follow.

The CEO calls me and asks if I get along with him, and I said we clash over priorities and approach. He started off saying he doesn't want me to quit or to think the whole company is like that. He also said the culture has to click, you can't treat this like it's just a job forever, etc. But then he said that he wants me to override my boss, because I'm the more experienced developer.

I know this can't end well. The CEO basically said that he'd have my back if things got ugly with my boss, but I'm skeptical.

The junior/mid-level on my team is basically my boss's lackey at this point, but he's also asked me to help push back against some of the insane requests, which I did.

My job now is to set the priorities and be the de-facto PM/team lead. If my boss gets out of line, I'm supposed to escalate it.

It's so bizarre to me. I'm grinding resumes, documenting, and trying to remember to laugh, but I'm getting tired of the antics in this industry. Do you have any advice besides that?

Sometimes, I look at some of the people I've worked with, and I can't believe they haven't been fired.
