3D printing

Finally visited my girlfriend I met online and gifted her this 3d printed resin sculpture that I designed in Zbrush and electroformed with genuine copper in honor of her nickname. Each and every time I told someone about her they asked whether I was certain she wasn't a catfish :p

Common misconception about Creative Commons licensing

Common misconception about Creative Commons licensing

TL;DR: Creative Commons is about giving your rights away, not enforcing them.

When you upload a 3D model to a repository (Printables, MakerWorld, Thingiverse etc), you have to choose a license to go with it. The most common framework for this is Creative Commons Licensing. These licenses are standardized by an international nonprofit organization. There are seven different versions to choose from, based on what rights you wish to reserve. In my experience, these licenses seem to be pushed as the default on most sites.

In general, I think this is a good system. You can choose how you want your work to be shared, and you can point people to a standardized charter rather than having to write your own terms and conditions. However, I do think that the way these licenses are implemented in 3D file sharing is misleading to new creators.

When you select a CC license, it is easy to think that you are adding protections to your work. "I want attribution and I don't want people to profit off my work, so this CC BY-NC license will enforce that."

The reality is that, at least in most western countries, you already have all those rights by default when you publish any original work. Using ANY of the Creative Commons licenses, even the strictest CC BY-NC-ND, means you are giving up some part of your copyright.

The concept behind Creative Commons is not to protect copyrightable works, but instead make them easier to share. It can be considered a form of "copyleft" protection: "I have the rights to this thing I made, but I'm choosing not to enforce some of those rights, because I want people to be able to share it and build on it."

Creative Commons enables some awesome collaborative projects (maybe you've heard of this one) and I don't want to discourage anyone from using them for releasing their 3D printing designs. I use Creative Commons licenses for all of my free designs, because I want them to be shared and remixed. But if you don't want to give up any of your rights, you should go with the "standard digital file license" or its equivalent on your platform of choice.

Creative Commons isn't designed specifically for our use case and there are some gaps. Every CC license - by definition - allows some form of sharing, and none of them require that sharing to be done on the same platform. So, for example, if you upload your model to Printables on a CC license, you can't stop anyone from reuploading it to MakerWorld. Given that both those sites offer a rewards program for popular models, you may want to post your work on all the top sites yourself.

Lastly, no license enforces itself. This is also true for non-CC licenses and default copyright. If someone starts selling your design, you are going to have to actively work to stop them. And it is very difficult to get stolen designs taken off of sites like AliExpress. Ask me how I know. As this sub is fond of saying: If you don't want your work stolen, don't upload it at all.

But I think you should upload your work anyway, and I hope this too-long post helps you decide how you want to do that.
