I’m surprised this was allowed in the first place, how would it not be a massive conflict of interest? With how seriously they are taking players betting idk how this wasn’t addressed before now

What's the most underrated single season in NBA history?

Bonus points for finding a season that's not just forgotten, but was overlooked in awards voting that year.

My pick:

08-09 Chris Paul: 22.8 points, 11.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds, 2.8 steals on just 3.0 turnovers, at 59.9 TS% with good enough defence he was 6th in DPOY voting.

He willed the N.O. Hornets to 49 wins and the 7th seed with an injury-plagued starting lineup of David West, Rasul Butler, Tyson Chandler and an old Peja.

By Win Shares it would rank the 16th best MVP season of all time, ahead of every MVP season by anyone not named Kareem, Wilt, Oscar, Jordan, Lebron or Shaq — but he finished 5th in voting that year (behind Bron, Kobe, Wade and Dwight, in that order) and was only 2nd-team All-NBA (behind Wade and Kobe at guard).

And yes, the Hornets lost the first round to a good Nuggets team.

(If it wasn't for this season, I'd pick Wade from the same year.)

Question: What was your introduction to the NBA?

My introduction was at age 4 when Space Jam with Michael Jordan came out. My dad took me and my brother to see it. That was the beginning of my interest in the NBA and basketball in general.

Every NBA season's MVP if the title was awarded to the player with the most counting stats

Every NBA season's MVP if the title was awarded to the player with the most counting stats

I recently saw a tweet comparing Monta Ellis and Derrick Rose in 2011, arguing that Ellis averaged one less point per game than Rose that season but is not talked about at all. Of course, it's a dumb argument because stats don't tell the whole story (especially on defense) but it made me curious to see which players would benefit the most if MVPs were just given out to whoever had the most counting stats. Here is a table of each season since the merger. Each season's counting stat leader (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks)

The MVP is determined by the sum of all their counting stats. The numbers in the brackets are the sum of the stats

Interesting statistical observations:

- 40% of voted MVPs (19/47) were that seasons counting stat average total sum leaders

- LeBron James would have the most MVPs since the merger. He would have seven (one tied with Kobe in 2006) MVPs if the award was given to the counting stat leader. Michael Jordan is second at six.

- MJ would have the longest stat MVP streak. He would have gotten all his MVPs six times consecutively

- The highest record counting stat average sum is held by Luka Dončić in the most recent NBA season at 54.8, higher than Russell Westbrooks triple double MVP season (54.7)

- Kevin Love was second in average counting stat sum twice in 2012 and 2014

- Over half the STAT MVP winners were centers pre 2000. From 2001-2024, there were only two: Shaq and Jokic (x2)

- The players who would have zero MVPs if the league had adopted this system are: Bill Walton, Julius Irving, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Derrick Rose, Stephen Curry, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid

- Giannis has the highest counting stat sum to not get the STAT MVP (50.7)

- The players who would gain their first MVP if the league had adopted this system are: Tracy McGrady, Dwyane Wade and Luka Dončić (x2)

- Pre-2000, the stat MVP favored players that averaged high rebounds. Post-2000, most of the stat MVPs were players that had a good balance of both assists and rebounds. Steals and blocks have become less and less of a factor when it comes to finding the stat MVP winners each season
