Guitarist John Barnicle and bassist/vocalist Mark DeRosa were hanging out and haphazardly playing songs together during the sweltering Chicago summer of 1995. Before they knew it, the first of what would become the hard-hitting post-punk sonic style of Dummy was written. With a sound influenced by Helmet, the Jesus Lizard, and Jawbox -- and that hinted at bands like the Buzzcocks and the Stranglers -- the two soon began looking for a drummer to solidify their lineup. They initially had some issues finding such a person, but Dummy were eventually made into a trio with the addition of Scott Kinsey.
Practicing and playing around town, the guys jumped to the studio the next summer to record. The resulting five-song Underwhelm EP was issued in 1997 as a cassette-only release, and featured Pegboy drummer Joe Haggerty on two of its tracks. The full-length Dank appeared in spring 1999, appending all of the then out of print Underwhelm as bonus tracks. Somewhere along the way Jimmy O'Connor, formerly of Jack the Lad and Chicago's the Tarts, replaced Kinsey behind the drum kit. The band's sophomore offering, Hang 'Em High, was recorded in 2002 and released in April of 2003. Again, as with their previous efforts, Brendan Burke was found in the production seat. Mostly gigging in and around Chicago, Dummy shared bills over the years with acts like the Buzzcocks, Iggy Pop, Rollins Band, and the Turbo A.C.'s.

Formed in 1994 when Schnabel met DiRienzo in LA after a show of his other band Cell (3).
Cell split soon afterwards and Schnabel and DiRienzo - now joined by
drummer Danny Ellen - started focusing on Ugly Beauty. The band signed a
record deal with Atlantic Records in 1995.
They had a minor hit with 'Forgotten Too.' The song was played in
the American Horror movie "I Know What You Did Last Summer" at the beach
in the beginning of the movie. The band split up in 1998, a year after
the release of their debut.

Operating under the rationale that songs and singing don’t matter much if you’ve got a bombass guitar sound that screams indie cred and supportive pals like Sonic Youth (who’ve certainly coasted down that same carpool lane on more than one occasion) in your corner, New York’s Cell made an exceedingly underwhelming bow on Slo*Blo, shaking the walls in a rich, tuneless blare. Singing guitarists Ian James and Jerry DiRienzo mash together roaring, boring textures while drummer Keith Nealy (a onetime Sonic Youth guitar tech) and bassist David Motamed (ex-Das Damen) kick the tracks along in vari-speed drive; if commercial post-punk noise were to get more formulaic than this, it’d have to be stacked in the generic-brand aisle. “Two” mounts a usable Led Zeppelin beat and something approaching a melody (to carry along the timeless “Your world’s in trouble and I’m seeing double”); the acoustic digression of “Bad Day” suggests Love It to Death-era Alice Cooper (though the opera singer that filters in from somewhere at the quietest moments doesn’t figure in that equation). Although “Hills” reaches for some pop purpose, Cell doesn’t get a firm grip, and jamming lets it slip away.
Firmly wacked into a presentable state by producer John Agnello, Living Room makes a concerted effort to tone down and shape up something better (setting the thresher controls closer to Crazy Horse) — and to a degree succeeds. It’s amazing what a difference a little loud/not-loud dynamic variety can make. Beyond the refurbished sound, DiRienzo’s songwriting is functional (“Goodbye” roughs up an attractive descending figure and serviceable pop melody), but even the better ones (including “Milky,” “Fly,” “Soft Ground” and the Johnny Thunders-styling “Sad & Beautiful”) are limited by the lack of an able singer and the are-we-done-yet? slouch that underlies all of Cell’s work.
Following Cell’s demise, DiRienzo launched a new quartet, Ugly Beauty, in 1996.

A band with an unfortunately over-optimistic name, the San Fernando Valley based quartet the Charthogs was one of seemingly hundreds of poppy alternative rock bands swept up in the post-Nirvana major-label signing spree. Singer and guitarist Danny Pinnella, guitarist Mat Dennis, bassist Ric Markmann (formerly of alt-rock no-hopers Cry Charity), and drummer Mauro Rubbi were signed to Atlantic in 1993 and released their self-titled debut the following year. The slightly heavier sounding follow-up, Do Your Mind, was released in 1994; a cover of Neil Young's classic "Mr. Soul" was the best thing on the album, unfortunately. The group split up after Atlantic dropped them; Markmann later showed up in Chris Cornell's post-Soundgarden backing band.

Steve Albini (/ælˈbiːni/; July 22, 1962 – May 7, 2024) was an American musician and audio engineer who was a member of the influential post-hardcore and noise rock bands Big Black (1981–1987), Rapeman (1987–1989) and Shellac (1992–2024). He was the founder, owner, and principal engineer of the Chicago recording studio Electrical Audio and recorded thousands of records, for acts including Nirvana, the Pixies, the Breeders, PJ Harvey, the Jesus Lizard and Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.
Albini was born in Pasadena, California, and raised in Missoula, Montana. After discovering the Ramones as a teenager, he played in a number of punk bands. He earned a degree in journalism at Northwestern University, Illinois, and he wrote for local zines before moving to Chicago, where he immersed himself in the punk scene. He formed Big Black in 1981, and released two full-length albums: Atomizer (1986) and Songs About Fucking (1987). During this period he continued to write for zines, and was often critical of local punk scenes and the industry as a whole.
Following the dissolution of Big Black, Albini opened Electrical Audio and focused on engineering. In 1992, he formed the band Shellac with bassist Bob Weston and drummer Todd Trainer, with whom he released six albums.
Noted for his outspoken and blunt opinions, Albini was very critical of the way the music industry is constructed, which he viewed as exploitative of artists. He refused to take royalties on albums he worked on, operating on a fee-only basis.[1]
Vancouver dream pop outfit Readymade came from the remains of Pipedream in 1995. Arch (guitar), Throwen Daggers (bass), D.T. (DJ/mixer), and Dr. Roberts (drums) compose an experimental fusion of space rock guitars and melodic dreamscapes similar to the likes of My Bloody Valentine and Southpacific. Their self-produced cassette EP, For Every Fledgling 12th Floor Jumper, a limited-edition rarity, was an enigmatic precursor to their proper debut, The Dramatic Balanced. Released in 1997, The Dramatic Balanced caught the eye of Endearing Records; Readymade had a deal and keyboardist Kevin Hilts was brought on board in 1998. A 7" single, entitled "The Block Alone," was issued shortly thereafter and Readymade took reign over college charts across North America and Canada. After a long break, Readymade issued On Point and Red in fall 2001.

Colfax Abbey were a mid '90's shoegaze band from Minneapolis, MN. The band name comes from Bram Stoker's book 'Dracula' where Carfax Abbey was the name of Dracula's estate in England, and the band members lived on Colfax Avenue S. in Minneapolis.

30 Lincoln Biography by Mike DaRonco
Having emerged out of a city known for its Indians, Drew Carrey, and WKRP, Cleveland, OH is know more for its baseball team and sitcoms rather than its rock scene, but 30 Lincoln wanted to change all that. Making their debut in 1994, this four piece brought together their love for The Heartbreakers, The Ramones, The Dead Boys and Rocket From The Crypt on top of their own brand of drunken garage rock. After four years of playing throughout the Mid-West, label attention was finally caught by Chicago's Johanns Face Records who released their debut "Avanti" in 1999.

Partridge (born 11 November 1953, Mtarfa, Malta) is an English singer,
songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, harmonica player and record producer
who co-founded the rock band XTC. He founded the label Ape House, initially to publish a wealth of XTC demos in the "Fuzzy Warbles" collection. Longtime partner of Erica Wexler.
All instruments played by Andy Partridge and recorded in his garden shed.

Old Pike were a five-man rock & roll band from Bloomington, IN, whose music was heavily influenced by Bruce Springsteen (most obviously apparent in frontman Tim Jones' phrasing and stage presence) and fellow Hoosier John Mellencamp. Anthem-like choruses, sentimental wordplay, murmuring organ, and a steady backbeat anchored Old Pike's somewhat alternative country take on rock music until they disbanded in the year 2000, after which point guitarist/songwriter Carl Broemel joined My Morning Jacket and frontman Jones formed Truth & Salvage Co.

Dump was the four-track solo project of James McNew, better known as the bassist of Yo La Tengo. Raised in Charlottesville, Virginia, McNew made his first home recordings at the age of 13; after attending college, he came to prominence as the bass player for Christmas, joining the group in late 1989. When they disbanded two years later, members Michael Cudahy and Liz Cox went on to form Combustible Edison, leaving McNew to join Yo La Tengo to record the 1992 effort May I Sing with Me. Although Dump came into being in January 1991, McNew did not issue any material under the name for over two years, debuting with Superpowerless, a charmingly lo-fi collection spotlighting his gentle vocals and proficiency on guitar, bass, drums, and organ. An EP of covers followed in 1995, prior to the release of the excellent 10" International Airport; the full-length I Can Hear Music rounded out the year's flurry of releases. After returning his focus to Yo La Tengo, McNew resurrected Dump in 1998 with the full-length A Plea for Tenderness; both the Women in Rock EP as well as the cassette-only Prince tribute That Skinny Motherfucker with the High Voice? followed a year later. After a five-year break, McNew returned with his most accomplished-sounding record yet, 2003's Grown-Ass Man on Shrimper. Apart from a split single with Jennifer O'Connor in 2008, McNew bided his time in Yo La Tengo, forsaking his solo project entirely.
