K-Variety

A lot of people I know, and probably in my country watches a lot of K-Drama. Some are actually addicted to it. But I am a different person. I rarely watch K-drama. I think I have finished around 5-6 K-Drama. What I like to watch are variety shows. Maybe because I watched Running Man first back in 2013 and I thought K-varieties are funny. I prefer seeing celebrities and actors being who they are rather than a character from a script.

How about you? Are you more or a K-variety or K-drama watcher?

misogyny in k-variety needs to stop

this is a rant.

i’m so over sexism and misogyny in k-variety. today, i came across an article about lovelyz mijoo which criticized her “sexy, pretty idiot” (AKA dumb blonde) image on television. let’s forget the fact that whether her bimbo image is bad or good but has any male celebrity been criticized the same way? if a male celebrity was playing mijoo’s tv persona: 1) no one raise it as an issue; and 2) people will praise how naturally innocent and funny he is. very similar malicious articles and comments were also written about jeon somin, park narae, and more.

i’m so over people who have higher standards for female celebrities in k-variety. the number of times i saw comments like “why is she overreacting”, “female celebrities are not funny”, and “male celebrities create better synergy” pisses me off. also, the lack of screen time female guests get when they appear with male guests needs to STOP. adding, the fact that we lack an all female-cast variety show in current media is BS.

i’m so over the blatant sexist comments and you should be too.

Underrated and Non-Mainstream K-Variety Shows to watch on Viu ? (Recommendations)

So i've been watching a lot of k-variety show on viu for a long time. I already watched most of popular shows. I need recommendations for some underrated shows. Needed something fresh and new concept, nonmainstream. (I already watch most of popular shows. Including almost all of JaeSuk shows. RM, HWY, IC, Michuri, SixthSense, YouQuiz, KB, NJTTW, KK, 3MAD, 2D1N, MUD, ROS)

What would you like to see on a K-Variety Show?

For example, I would love to see all the members of Red Velvet be on Running Man and not just for one short segment. I also would have like to know what Tiffany's dream would have been on Sister's Slam Dunk if she wasn't removed. In that regards, i would like for Sister's Slam Dunk to return for a 3rd season.

Who do you think will be good future K-variety entertainers?

Talking abt this bcs i realized most of my favorite varieties are hosted by entertainers from the old generation: RM, Knowing Bros, NJTTW, Radio Star, BJW Alley Restaurant, Life Bar, etc.

For this generation we can see seasoned idols who work great in varieties, like Kim Heechul, for example. But, what about the next generation? Can you see who they are from current Kpop/Kdrama/Kcomedian generation?

My pick would be Momoland's JooE. She is active, loves to talk, doesn't really care much old style idol "images", and can be great moodmakers. She just needs more experience on the field.

So with news of Lipstick getting its wiki axed why not leverage this subreddits wiki system to create our own? That way we can keep it updated while increasing the value of the subreddit and bringing more subscribers into the sub!

If done would anyone be interested in doing it?

EDIT:

I've done some ground work on the Ask Us Anything wiki page here. LMK what changes would be best

Jessi on Variety Shows...

As I've said i the past, I am a big Jessi fan and she and YJS were my gateway to K-Variety shows. I like their vibes together and separately when they interact with other people. I love that theres fun and jokes but I also love the times when theres just chaos. However since Jessi is a singer / rapper, I know that shes only ever got her own show which was Showterview and that she was a cast member on The Sixth Sense.

What I want to know is which other Variety shows she has been on and if its possible to know the episode numbers.

I have already watched her on Hangout with Yoo for Refund Sisters and a couple of other episodes she did for Chuseok. And I have watched her on Sixth Sense.

The reason I ask since my YT feed is now crawling with K-Variety clips, I keep finding some videos here and there of Jessi on different shows. So I would appreciate any help for my question.

Trashy K-variety/reality shows

Have been watching trashy US reality shows (mostly TLC trash: Extreme Sisters, Counting On, 90 Day Fiancé), got me thinking has there been any trashy reality shows in Korea? Are there any? I know the possibility of it happening is low but imagine a Real Housewives of Gangnam or sumn, or a reverse 90 Day Fiancé with foreigners trying to marry Koreans. Tasty

I live alone k variety , need help to find this actor/ episode

Hello, I saw this episode of an actor in the I live alone Korea variety series. I have been trying to find that actor . He lives in a house that has three storeys, but it is very cold. He also has to use a propane/kerosene heater to warm the place and he just looks so sad. There was also a scene of him skipping but was not very good at it and the host kinda made fun of him. The last scene was him eating an entire stuffed chicken by himself. The episode has been on my mind and I wanted to see how the actor is doing. Anyone know who the actor is ?

Who is a total kVariety turnoff the show for you?

I've struggled with Kim Gura for years. I don't find him funny or talented but could zone his shit out enough to make it through Radio Star once a week. Since that video showed up of him touching some young female idols in their breasts. I can't even do that now.

Who is an instant turn off for you among the regular KVariety crowd ?

If Running Man ended (genuine question)

For context, my favorites go to K-variety show used to be Infinite Challenge and Running Man. Those two are in my opinion the top two my favorite show. The reason is this show almost all the game and challenge involve a lot of physicality. Which create a lot of memorable slapstick comedy. After Infinite Challenge ended in 2018 my go to show right now is obviously RM.

However it beg a question for me, what if someday RM would ended ? Obviously because they are not as young anymore. Nowadays, it almost becomes a talkshow, the game is much more simple and they absolutely drop the name tag elimination game which the most iconic game ever in K-variety.

Well, I can always rewatch the old episode. But I do wonder someday if Running Man ended. What is the next big show that can replace (or rival) them ? Would we ever get something that have same huge scale game or large scope ? That can match the sheer physicality & rawness from the past ? Can it recreated the iconic chemistry between member that we all love from the show ?

....or maybe this type of show would be to outdated right now in modern time ??

What's your favorite non-mainstream K-Variety?

I'm sure many of you know well known programs like KB, Running Man, or any recent shows that have big hype and are often subbed online, but there are so many others that might not be that famous but actually interesting.

My personal favorite is Fisher City (Channel A) which still doesn't see any subbing, but I enjoy it anyway. And recently Do Yeon joined the team as well (after Microdot left), making the banters more interesting.

What's yours?
