Anews comments have a reputation in the wider anarchist internet for being a caustic mess. That reputation, I believe, is well warranted.
I believe this because I read through many of them anyway in search for the handful of gems, informative contributions.
My proposal to get more of the good stuff & less of the white-hot yuckery is simple. If you find yourself about to contribute to a back-and-forth, stop—go reply to something that has no comments instead.
This could reduce the tendency for a small handful of posts to have dozens of comments which are largely exchanges of insults while others appear to capture the attention of no one.
If you avoid commenting because you don't want to become Part Of The Problem, I would also suggest you try leaving a contribution somewhere no one else has yet as a "safer" option than wading into the extractivist core.
If you hate this proposal, no need to reply. I've written your comment for you: seething ressentiment UkWayne brow, brah!
you know this isn't much of a suggestion...
do you just prefer to think this problem is about individual choices?
i would argue that most of the internet is heavily moderated and curated these days and if it wasn't, it would look like this place but scaled waaay up. @news is just a bit of a museum for an older version of the online experience that i remember quite well from the 90s and early 2000s.
it was vile, it was full of invective and ad hominem and much worse. the mods are bailing out a very leaky boat here, workin for free and an appeal like this to "do better" just ... woefully underestimates the reality of the average internet user? perhaps?
put another way, the people who would respect a request like this, aren't the problem at all.
look at what happened to twitter after elon, if you doubt my ... misanthropic realism lol
Completely monolithic "the problem" seriously anymore, it seems like most political posters just don't want to deconstruct anything.
Not an incredibly helpful forum topic.
i appreciate the thought, anon. and it does intrigue me to note the stories that no one comments on.
and lumpy, what are anarchists if not bailers of leaky boats of various sorts? i mean, we're lots of other things, but we're certainly that too.
true! very true
but while bailing the boat, one can curse and scream at the ocean as much as they like ...
Learn to thread your replies, noob. There's a reply button beneath each comment and you can click it and it will thread your reply. This is an anarchist website we are not boat repair people or tailors but we do understand how to thread our replies!
Accepting the early death of non-dualist threads like this one Within a collection of people who are energized in 'dualist' mode with its binary moral judgement of people and groups and its rallying of energies wherein people attempt to; "lead the world in battling immediate evils and promoting the ultimate good” -- Barack Obama there is only passing interest in trying on the thinking and acting apparel of non-duality.
The appeal of duality is the appeal that comes with thinking of oneself as a fountainhead rather than a figurehead. This is a firmly entrenched cultural programming that makes Western civilization what it is. As Heraclitus was saying 2500 years ago, it is as if people wake up, hear and understand that 'everything is in flux' [non-dualism] and then promptly fall asleep again, forgetting everything that they have just heard and understood and reverting to 'belief in the fixed and persisting identities of independently-existing things-in-them-selves that EITHER 'are' OR 'are not' [dualism]. If it were not that way, Western civilization as we know it, would lift away like a fog bank vaporized by the morning sun, but that is not about to happen; i.e. the dualist psychology of Western society is not going transform into the same sort of non-dualist psychology (like that of relational language using cultures) overnight, because noun-and-verb language-and-grammar is the dualist 'anchor' that facilitates immediate regression into dualism [the 'falling asleep' back into dualism after having awoken and heard and understood non-dualism]. As F. David Peat and others have noted (Piaget, Vygotsky), our concept development, from childhood to adulthood proceeds from the more complex to the more simple, from a good grasp of what might be called 'polynomials of higher degree to polynomials of first degree'. As infants, we understand 'topology' which is purely relational and has no dependency on 'things' and then we 'shift gears' and move on to 'geometry' with its concepts of local invariable closed form solids (things-in-themselves), ... so that if the infant looks down into the flowing river and sees a whirlpool skittling across the flow, his topological sense understands this as an inhabitant (whirlpool cell) - habitat (flow) non-duality which is purely relational, ... while in his adulthood, after becoming proficient in noun and verb language, he will see and understand this in dualist, geometric terms as an 'inhabitant' (whirlpool cell) in a separate containing 'habitat' (flow).
That this, the dynamic he saw as an infant was one of transforming relations without any 'multiplicity of things' while as noun-and-verb language-speaking adult, he sees the same dynamic in terms of two separate things, one of which is contained in the other in the manner of the Matrewshky, the Russian doll which contains a nested multi-plicity of dolls, one inside the other. For the topology orienting infant, the nesting was purely one of relational forms within relational forms, as in a fluid dynamic.
Emile???? That you??????
If th Anees comment culture shifted that would be nice, but maybe what would be better is a proliferation of sites with easy tor access and comment sections. Anarchy, you might say
Mu challenge is that I would like these programming nerds at anews planet to stop requiring javasnitch on all their very important websites. I just want to look at cringe metaverse posts and videos. Is that so much to ask to stop with the "javascript and cookies are required" laziness? We are anarchists and need to be private! FUCK!
I'm no big techie but this site and anokchan can be fully used without Javasnitches and cookies. As the Pleroma instance it's a totally different tech being used, and I dunno if there's any other social media aggregator or scraper that doesn't require JS to use. And the Aplanet IRC? If there's still people using that, you can just set up your IRC client for it across Tor Socks.
Hello, fallow hackorz, don't forget to wear your Tor Socks.

Nice try FBI
Been tried before, a few years back Didn't work too well. But since the major problem with comments these days appear to be cheap low-level trolling and hate speech, this might work better, maybe... Tho not sure I'd roll dice over it.
